Knights Grange Works - Over
« on: Friday 29 May 09 18:59 UTC (UK) »

I have found relatives living at the above address in 1881.  Does anyone know if it is still there and what sort of housing was it?  It seems a strange address to me Huh

Many thanks.

Del, this area is know the Knights Grange Sports Complex and Golf Course.  If you look at the Cheshire Tithe maps comparing the modern map with the old maps you can see there was a small cluster of houses here. There is also an old building at the golf club.  Winsford Historical Society would I am sure give you more details on the past of this area.  It was certainly close to all of the salt workings that were famous in Winsford.

Many thanks, Kathb.  And you are spot on with the salt works.  All the family for about 3 gens so far worked at the salt works.  I shall try the historical society, many thanks Smiley

Knightsgrange Works were on Bradford Road, north of Winsford just before the present Meadow Bank Mine. This is from the 1882 Ordnance Survey map.

Thank you for that.  It seems a very strange address to put on the census.  I will contact Winsford Historical Society for info.

Many thanks to all Smiley

The address is actually Knights Grange Works NEW ROAD Over. New Road is the road from Winsford High Street running north on the west side of the River Weaver. It now continues as Bradford Road, then Mill Lane. As you can see from the map there are many different works along the line of the road, which does not seem to have been built at the time the survey was carried out for the 1882 map. The enumerator seems to have distinguished the sections of the road by the works along side. In this case the houses referred to were alongside the  Knightsgrange Works. There are also houses in Knights Grange Row, New Road, Over. Other addresses are;
Stubbs Salt Wks. New Road, Over.
Lovatts Wks. New Road, Over.
Railway Crossing, New Road, Over. Jesse HEATLEY, Railway Signalman
New Road (at Manchester Old Wks.)
New Road (Deakins D-Yrd), Over.

Hi Del,

It's likely that Deakins had the salt works at this time (1880's) they certainly had the dockyard on the Knight's Grange site where they built Flats. The proprietor at this time would have been John Buckley Deakin.

Northwich Guardian 14 JAN 1888
- "Messrs. George Deakin, Limited of Winsford, have commenced building at their dockyard at the Knights Grange Works"

Is anyone familiar with the Whitegate Way?  This location looks like the bottom end, Foulkes Junction on the old railway.  The Whitegate Way is a disused railway track now used by ramblers, cyclists etc.

As I walk my dog there regularly, I can take some photos for you

Hi Sallysmum

My relations were born in Whitegate and also lived in Whitechapel, is that familiar to you and do you know what the area was like in the 1800's?  If you could take a photo that would be great and very much appreciated.

Meadowbank and The Mosses in Over were also places where they lived.  Are they familiar to you?

Many thanks Del

HI Del
I'm walking the dog today where I believe Knightsgrange cottages to have been so I will take a photo of the area and post it for you.  I regularly go through Whitegate so if you have a house name or number I will see what I can do.  Whitegate  has a lovely church  which I can photo for you.  I do not know  Whitechapel -- do you have any other info on this area?  As these will be places where people are presently living, pm me your email addy and I will email it to you
