Del, this area is know the Knights Grange Sports Complex and Golf Course. If you look at the Cheshire Tithe maps comparing the modern map with the old maps you can see there was a small cluster of houses here. There is also an old building at the golf club. Winsford Historical Society would I am sure give you more details on the past of this area. It was certainly close to all of the salt workings that were famous in Winsford. http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/TwinMaps.aspx?township=EDT_314-2 Regards Kathb

Many thanks, Kathb. And you are spot on with the salt works. All the family for about 3 gens so far worked at the salt works. I shall try the historical society, many thanks

Knightsgrange Works were on Bradford Road, north of Winsford just before the present Meadow Bank Mine. This is from the 1882 Ordnance Survey map.

The address is actually Knights Grange Works NEW ROAD Over. New Road is the road from Winsford High Street running north on the west side of the River Weaver. It now continues as Bradford Road, then Mill Lane. As you can see from the map there are many different works along the line of the road, which does not seem to have been built at the time the survey was carried out for the 1882 map. The enumerator seems to have distinguished the sections of the road by the works along side. In this case the houses referred to were alongside the Knightsgrange Works. There are also houses in Knights Grange Row, New Road, Over. Other addresses are; Stubbs Salt Wks. New Road, Over. Lovatts Wks. New Road, Over. Railway Crossing, New Road, Over. Jesse HEATLEY, Railway Signalman New Road (at Manchester Old Wks.) New Road (Deakins D-Yrd), Over.

Hi Del,
It's likely that Deakins had the salt works at this time (1880's) they certainly had the dockyard on the Knight's Grange site where they built Flats. The proprietor at this time would have been John Buckley Deakin.
Northwich Guardian 14 JAN 1888 - "Messrs. George Deakin, Limited of Winsford, have commenced building at their dockyard at the Knights Grange Works"
