Dougan Family, Lennoxtown
« on: Saturday 30 May 09 10:15 UTC (UK) »

I have started the huge task of preparing a Roll of Honour of Scotland's dead from WW1, currently working through c. 7,000 Argylls. Three Dougan brothers (Hugh, James and Patrick) from Lennoxtown died. There was one sister, Maryann and another brother, John, who appears, from the Census records, to have been the twin brother of James.

Can anyone confirm this?

Alistair,
I admire the task you are taking on.

Whilst I cannot confirm specifics, I suggest you have a look here....

There are a couple of sister sites but alas, the links escape me for now.

I suggest you get in touch with apanderson (Anne) on Rootschat here....

PS Alistair,

I apologise,

I appear to have missed the main point of your post, ie, proving the relationships of the Dougans.

It would be really helpful if you could post all the info you have....dates of birth, parents, details of the census records you've checked etc.

Ermmm - that's a link to an Ancestry tree which not everyone can access.  Even if they could, why should we have to wade through an entire tree to find the bit you are asking about.

Quite frankly Alistair, I think you need to be showing YOUR research and results and not relying on us to do it for you.

I've tried to be as helpful as I can but you don't seem to be putting that much effort into this enquiry yourself.

Sorry, I'm not coming back to this.

Dave, be fair to Alastair  Smiley He's working on a WW1 project, it is not his direct line. He is trying to connect with any possible descendents to try and flesh out some detail on the family.

Alastair, I would follow up on Dave's suggestion and contact Anne (apanderson) who is a complete whizz on this area!

This looks to be a WW1 memorial including the Dougans, and a couple of other Dougan men mentioned, at the Campsie Parish War Memorial http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic817.html

Grumpy, verging on the offensive, but apology accepted.

I have just tried the link from my posting and it opens up the family's census record.

Maybe another apology is due?

I've just found another two sad deaths of two brothers from Menstrie

Dave's point re the Ancestry link is that if other RootsChat members do not subscribe to Ancestry, they will not be able to access this information which may be relevant that's all.

From that War Memorial, this looks like Daniel Dougan and his family in 1901 - maybe cousins to the other three Dougan boys given how similar the names are:

Hugh Dugan 44
Sarah Dugan 40
Patrick Dugan 20
William Dugan 19
John Dugan 17
Margt Dugan 15
Hugh Dugan 13
Daniel Dugan 10
Manus Dugan 6
Mary Dugan 5
Sophia Dugan 2

Address: House At Grochan Linis Works, Campsie

The parents' names above come from the link from Dave www.cwgc.org

Can we all be pals again?

Alistair,

It might be a good idea to join the Scottish War Graves Project and the Scottish War Memorial Project Forums, won't cost anything and there's a lot of really knowledgeable folk there. There's a section for queries/requests.

In case you haven't already looked, there are no Dougans listed on an stones (that I've found) in Campsie Churchyard or Cemetery on the War Graves.

Anne (who's also grumpy 'cos it's too hot!!)  Roll Eyes

Alastair, don't push it.
I think I was very helpful.
Yes, I got grumpy and yes, it was probably offensive.  I've apologised.
Leave it at that.

Monica et al

I think these are the details of the family with the three WW1 deaths Patrick, John and Hugh died and it does look as if James could be John's twin.

James would be Patrick's twin rather than John's?
