Messenger and Microphone
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 17:10 UTC (UK) »

I will try and ask this concisely and hope for answer please.

I use Windows Livr Messenger, I do not have a web cam but I am in contact with relatives that do have web cams with built in microphones.

I don‘t want to buy a web cam but could I buy a microphone and plug into USB and be able to speak to them on Windows Live Messenger, would it just involve plug in and go?

pretty much - I had that setup at one time. I think Messenger has a 'Wizard' to help you configure and test your Mike ....

This would depend on the software and the type of microphone you obtained. I am not sure if you can get a usb mic and if you did I would suspect it would  cost more than a stand alone webcam, all of which are relatively cheap.

Most microphones that I am aware of would plug into your sound card and would require a certain amount input from someone to actually get it up and running. However try your local pc dealers they would not doubt be able to help.

Thanks Alan, good advice.

I have seen that I can get a webcam with mic quite cheaply - however I am not photogenic so would prefer mic alone really.

I really need to look into this at a dealer and get them to explain things then.

Thanks again

Hi Selina,

Amazon can supply a USB plug and play mic by Logitec...it seems to have some good review's.

Doesn't seem too expensive, see what you think.

The reviews are good and it sounds easy to instal.  I think I may have seen that in supermarket so will look for it again.

Thanks

Same here ..... used it for Messenger and SKYPE and just as easy to test the Mike through Control Panel.

Cheers

...and if it ain't what you want, get the webcam - if you cover the lens (black insulating tape will do it), then you can use the mike without being seen.

Ha!  What a good idea, I never thought of that!

Its not that I look completely like the back of a bus but I just don't fancy using a cam but would like to chat.

Many thanks for everyone's help.

Well you don't want people to see you sitting in your nightwear ..... I just aim the webcam for the back of the room. Grin
