Sarah Wright born Rainham Essex - brickwall
« on: Saturday 30 May 09 21:05 BST (UK) »

I have hit a brickwall - looking for birth and family information for Sarah Wright.

Here's what I know:

Sarah Wright married Frederick Davidson in February 1880 in Bethnal Green Register Office - finally!
Sarah is listed as spinster 52
Her father is listed as James Wright - deceased,  occupation Plate Layer  (what is/was a plate layer?)
Frederick is listed as batchelor 52, a bookbinder - father Charles  occupation gardener

I have found no other marriage evidence.

Frederick and Sarah Davidson are listed in 1851-1891 census consistently as married, born 1828.
In 1851 Frederick is 22, Sarah 23 living Queen St, Lambeth.  Frederick born Stamford Hill, Hackney.  Sarah born Rainham Essex.
Other addresses are 1861 - Glasshouse Yard, Cripplegate; 1871-91 - Libra Rd, Bow

Frederick died in 1892 in Hackney, Sarah died in 1905 in Hackney

They had many children and every birth certificate shows the mother as Sarah Davidson formerly Wright.

I am wondering if someone has information on Rainham records that could help me define Sarah's birth and her associated family.

I'm also stuck on Frederick's side at the same point...birth information and associated family.

Any assistance would be so appreciated.

Thank you.  K

I think a plate layer is associated with someone who worked on the railways laying and repairing railway tracks. My Dad worked on railway tracks for many years and would use the term plate laying (I think it means the task of laying down new rails and fishplates - fishplates join rails together) .

Thank you for your comment on the "plate layer".  I suspected that it was connected with the railway.  My railway history isn't that uptodate however I wonder whether that would have been James Wright's occupation when Sarah was born in 1828.  I have looked for James Wright in the various census and just come to the conclusion that my entire family, on both sides , is singularly unoriginal when it comes to names!  Too many warrens!

Appreciate your input.  K

Hi Katherine,

It is odd that Sarah's children' birth certs have "formally" used in the mother's name while on her marriage cert she said she was a spinster.

It suggests she had been married before to a Mr Wright, doesn't it.

Have you looked such a marriage, say between 1844 - 1849 in Essex maybe?

You have a good point.  However, I have many other birth certificates from the Bethnal Green, Stepney, Shoreditch, and Poplar registration districts which seem to have the protocol..."formally.....x"   .
I haven't found any references pre 1850
Their first born appears to be Charles b September 1851 when they lived at 30  Great Chart Street Shoreditch/Hoxton NT according to B cert.

Open to multiple suggestions  - (my links are online since non UK based)

I think she just pretended to the registrar that she was married to the father. I have birth certificates like that, I think if the couple were cohabiting and if it was the mother registering the birth she decided it was the easiest thing to do. In a city area the registrar is unlikely to personally know them and know it was a lie.

At some point the husband must have decided it was about time to get married.

I have to agree with you Hazel, she was probably protecting their reputation.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to Parish Registers and that does seem the way to go but as Sarah consistently said she was born in 1828 I found one possible candidate family in 1841.

James Wright, 38, Labourer.
Mary Wright, 67 (James' mother?).
John Wright, 20, Labourer (James' brother?).
Sarah Wright, 13.
John Wright, 11.
Charles Wright, 9.
Mary Wright, 4.
Ref: HO107, Piece 323, Folio 68, Page 11.

They are in the nearest to Rainham, living in West Ham.
Sarah has a brother Charles (same name as her first born).

However, we do need the someone to look at the Parish Registers.
