Edward Joseph FERRIS d 1903 Bodmin
« on: Friday 14 August 09 20:52 UTC (UK) »

I think this is my gt gt uncle's death, shows on FreeBMD at Bodmin age 15 which would agree with his age.

I'd be grateful if anyone could look up his death record to confirm what his father's first name was and his place/date of birth please?

1911 census for his father and mother states that they had 9 children but only 7 were still alive, I have traced most but can't find Edward Joseph Ferris, he was recorded on the census return for 1901.

Hello fifer
Welcome to RootsChat

The death certificate would not give place and date of birth - nor would it give parent's names

it would show date, place and cause of death, age and informant's name (could be a relative)

You would have to purchase the death cert for this information

birth cert would give parents names (including mother's maiden name)

Ah! aren't we Scots lucky death certs give us so much information!

So there is no way to tie this lad's death to my uncle if the family lived elsewhere and they were not informants?

Occasionally it will say husband of -or son of - but it is only occasionally.

Not much info on our death certs

Where does Edward Joseph give as p.o.b. in 1901 - I assume the bodmin death is his??

1901 Stonehouse Devon
1891 East Stonehouse Devon

I can't assume that is his death without proof of some kind either of dob place of birth or father's first name.

the only thing you can go by is there are no other Edward joseph ferris b 1880-1890 in UK

and (i think) there is only a distance of 31 miles between where he lived in 1901 and where the death took place - possibly less -as Bodmin reg district covers quite a wide area

if you could find baptisms of all of the children and then Edward and another are missing in all probbility Edwaed will be one who died

Their first born died the year of birth.  So I only have one more to find, but the girls married which makes searching for them in some cases more difficult and obviously Ed J lived to his teens (at least) and I haven't found him on the 1911 census.  Sad

so if the 1911 states 9 children were born but only 7 still living it could be that the first born and Edward were the ones who had died ?

Yes that's what I think but now looking for proof so will have to trace all the other siblings either in 1911 census, marriage children's births etc before I can confirm.

Hi , There's a very good chance he or his parents come from the Bere Ferris/Plymouth areas of Devon. The family moved there from Norfolk and I have found many descendants in Cornwall.

John Ferris b 1852 was born in Kerry, Ireland, he was Irish not English, joined the navy and settled in Plymouth.  Census 1911 is the only one I've found him on with his wife and son (my grandfather) place of birth clearly given as Kerry Ireland.

The Bere Ferris families are not related.
