Well you won't find it in the Lichfield Mercury as it was not published at the time. The best bet is to see if it was recorded in the Staffordshire Advertiser.
They will have copies at the William Salt library

Hi,
A problem could be that the re-opened canal follows a different route around the city now than when it closed, and it is difficult to find photographs let alone deaths occuring.

I have found one or two in my researching but none that far back. The other alternative is the Birmingham newspapers in the library.

In September the canal group are at the history weekend in Lichfield library, I will ask when I go.

You could try the Birmingham Coroners office, they may be able to help as there would almost certainly have been an inquest. Phil.

i have rec traced a relative who drowned in the grand union, if he was from a canal family you will find it hard as most would not speak to papers e.c.t. i traced mine via the coroners office for the area at date of death( note areas change over time) .i did eventually get the death cert
