Some photos from the 1950s:
http://www.francisfrith.com/sixpenny-handley/photos/

(Their site also suggests some books.)

The parish clerk may be able to help with the history:
http://www.opcdorset.com/SixpennyHandleyFiles/SixpennyHandley.htm

Googling suggests various sites for the history as well.

My sister sent me a good book about Cranborne Chase which gives lots of background info on the area around 6d Handley . It is called "Cranborne Chase" and was written by Desmond Hawkins, pub. by Gollancz in 1980. She paid £2.99 for it at a charity stall, but there are several copies on Amazon. The book says that much of the village was burned down in 1892, the resulting insurance payouts leading to the envious saying " Handley men wear two waistcoats." The book has quite a good bibliography.
If you need anything in particular photographed, I have to go down there in a couple of weeks and could have a look about.

Sixpenny Handley and every other rural parish in England has or at least has the right to a Parish Council, the third voluntary tier of Local Government, which is serviced by a Parish Clerk. Sometimes the Parish Council has old documents preserved usually in the local archives, but sometimes in the care of the clerk. The local District or County Council will be able to give you the name and address of the clerk.

Hi Carol,
Just thought I'd mention that you won't get any photos earlier than the 1840s, as photography was not invented until around about then  Wink Smiley

Hi,

Dorset History centre are now offering  prints (of various images from the archives) for sale; might be worth a quick look.

There is a publication "Samuel Buck's Yorkshire Sketchbook" of 18th and early 19th century sketches and engravings of villages and buildings which though plainly useless to you Carole, may have an equivalent publication for Dorset. Worth a try?
