Where is Newinton - Durham

Hello

I have a relative Letitia Mordecai who according to the 1851 census record
(under her married name carter)that she was born in Newinton, Durham, England in 1788.

I assume that this is possibly a mis spelling of Newington, Can anyone advise where this is/was?

I know that she was married in Dalton-le-Dale and lived there until she died in 1861, however I am trying to work out roughly where she lived before the census started so I can trace further back, most other Mordecais appear to be from the Hartlepool district with a handful in sunderland judging from the searches I have carried out on Durham records online.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

My first thought is that you should look at the original image as I do not think it says Newinton.  Could it be Strainton/ Stainton or something similar?  It is not easy to read though as it is very feint but I am sure it has ai in it.
Was she still alive for the 1861 census?

I had looked at the original page but as you say it is not easy to read, She died in 1861 before the census took place so unfortunately I have nothing else to go on.   I'll have another look and zoom in.

There is no place called Newington in County Durham. See http://nd.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/dro.nsf/vwebplaces

It could be Stranton. There are only eleven miles between Stranton and Dalton-le-Dale.

I think You could be right, just printed it out and using my hubby's reading glasses to magnify it. It does took more like St at the start rather than an N.  And that is where quite a few mordecais have come up on my search on Durham records online.

On the index at Durham Records Online they give the birthplace as Stainton.

So it does.  I hadn't thought to search the census on DRO, I was only looking at the parish records.  I'm still unsure whether the original scan says Stranton or Stainton as there is something that looks like an I but the dot could be dirt or another mark, but it is more to go on than I had.

If you just search Mordecai in baptisms on Durham Records Online - a lot of them are in Stranton.
Both Stranton and Stainton are in the Durham Bishops transcripts http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1309819;t=browsable;w=0;p=collectionDetails - you could try having a trawl through - you might be lucky.

I think you can forget checking out Stranton - Durham Records Online apparently have Stranton baptisms from 1580 onwards  http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/PRInfo.php - and she doesn't show up there.
I just had a quick look in Stainton in the appropriate years, but there's no sign.

I had looked on Durham Record online on Saturday and couldn't anything for her either other than her Marriage to Francis Carter, but unfortunately that is of no help.  One of the main reasons for me thinking that it is Sranton over Stainton is the Name Letitia (or Lettice) that is being thron up on the searches I have carried out so far, it is a family name carried down all the way to my Gt Grandmother in my line.  There is nothing to say that she was baptised, however I will keep digging. 

Thank you for the link to the Bishops transcripts, It has proved very useful for another branch, but I'll have to wait until tomorrow to search again as the have the site down for maintenance.

Hi, according to a transcript of Stranton PRs there is a gap in the records between 10 June 1777 and 06 July 1778. This is very frustrating as I am trying to find a Lettice or Alice Brown who is possibly the daughter of William Brown and Ann Mordecai.
