Is anyone going to the local studies section of Bradford library? Or anywhere else that has Thornton (Bradford) records?
I'm still looking for the marriage of James Driver. He was born about 1770 (I think). His daughter Lydia was baptised in Bradford in 1794, but says she was born in Denholme on the 1851 census. There is a possible marriage in Bradford (1786) but I think it's a bit too early, and another possible in Halifax (1792). I'd really like to be sure there isn't a Thornton one.

Unfortunately I cannot help you with your query regarding the marriage of James Driver, hopefully someone else will be able to.
My reason for responding to your post is that I have the Driver family from the Thornton/Denholme area in my family tree, although I have not managed to go as far back as you. The earliest person I have is Jonas Driver born about 1802.
Best Wishes Cjl

Hi Cjl
Looks like me may be related! I've tried to sort out the Drivers before, but without success. Far too many James Drivers (and Jonas Drivers), all born around the same time.
My Lydia Driver married Joseph Bolton in Bradford, and they then lived in Thornton. I've only found the one baptism for a Lydia Driver, in 1794 in Bradford, father James. I can't identify any siblings, or James's baptism as there are too many possibilities.
Worryingly, there is an unmarried Lydia Driver or about the same age in Halifax in 1841 and 1851, but she says she was born Warley.

Hi Anne
Just looking through for you and your James Driver. As you mentioned there were quite alot of them around the same time in Yorkshire. I did look at the marriages as well and most of them married someone called Mary, so even more confusing. I would say that I know you mention James was born in Bradford but have you considered he could have been born just outside Bradford and that somewhere like Haworth and Silsden are near Bradford and that it is their Metroplitan area. The reason I mention this is that when searching for Joseph Bolton who married Lydia, I can only find the nearest Joseph born in Haworth. Just wondered if thats why he married James daughter Lydia as he might have known their family. I did find Lydias wedding on the 20th September 1819 in Bradford. The reason I mention Haworth is that I found some of my relatives classed as Bradford only to find them born in Haworth. Dont think its got its own registrar office even now. If you could find out James date of birth it would solve finding him amongst the many James Drivers of the 1770/1780's. Hope you find your James regards Sandymc

Thanks Sandymc
You are quite right about Haworth, all the children of Joseph Bolton and Lydia were baptised in Haworth - very near to Denholme and Thornton and close links with Rev Bronte and family! Joseph also gives his place of birth as Denholme in 1851.
I need to keep looking for the right James Driver!
Thanks again
Anne

I think that our Driver families may well be connected. As I said in my previous reply to your post, my earliest Driver ancestor is Jonas Driver.
He appears on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census records, each time with a different year of birth ranging from 1794 to 1806. The 1851 census has his place of birth as Ovenden.
He married Hannah Sugden and according to the census records they lived at Denholme Gate, Thornton.
Maybe at some point we will be able to make a connection between our two Driver families.
Best Wishes CJL

I think it's a virtual certainty, given the size of the villages round there. They are tiny even now.
It's very familiar territory to me as a child, up Denholmegate Road from Hipperholme, through Shelf and Queensbury, past the Raggalds Inn, then there's a crossroads. Straight on to Denholme, right turn to Thornton, with a steep hill down into Bradford. Denholme and Thornton village are only a few kilometres from each other.
Lydia (Driver) and Joseph Bolton lived about halfway between Denholme and Thornton, at Wellheads Lane in 1841, and Close Head Lane in 1851. Lydia had died by 1861, but Joseph is still there in Close Head Lane. These two roads are just round the corner from each other so they didn't go far.
I don't know if you are familiar with the area, but it's easy to find the roads on google maps.
I'll keep trying! I think I have sisters for Lydia, Grace (1792) and Susannah 1797. Both baptised in Bradford but Susannah died aged 21 months and is buried at Howarth.

Hi Anne and Cjl
I have looked for both your James and Jonas again. This time I found James Driver b 13th October 1767 in Haworth with a father called John.
The only 3 women who he would be old enough to have married are Nancy Ambler in Bradford 14th August 1786 Mary Mitchell 17th September 1789 in Bingley Mary Fergueson in 1793 in Keighley
I think it most probably would be Mary Fergueson as she was 21 when she married which was about the right age in those days with an older man of about 5 years older. Most of my family have been that age group when marrying. Otherwise Lydia would have been illegitimate from the years she was born in 1794.
I did find a Jonas Driver chrisitened in Haworth on 19th January 1797 with a Dad called James but again no Mum mentioned.
As Lydia was also b 1797 it could be that Lydia and Jonas were twins? Just a thought. Hope this doesnt confuse the matter and hope we all crack the Drivers lol.
regards Sandymc

Sandymc,
Thank you for looking for Jonas (I didn't mean to muscle in on Anne's post)
On the 1851 census
Jonas is living in White Shaw, Denholme Gate, Thornton
Living either side of him are William Driver born 1800 Thornton and John Driver born 1797 Ovenden, In this particular census Jonas is recorded as being born in 1794 in Ovenden.
I am assuming that William and John may have been Jonas' brothers.
Best Wishes CJL

Hello CJL
I am interested that your Jonas says he was born in Ovenden.
I have the Halifax St John records on CD from Calderdale FHS. There are a handful of Driver records in each category, almost all giving an abode of Ovenden, Thornton or Bradford. I think Ovenden township extended as far north as Ogden.
I will send you a PM with the details this evening.
