GLIDDON family Okehampton
« on: Monday 01 June 09 05:32 UTC (UK) »

My Grandmother Priscilla Rule Gliddon (born 1863 at Calstock) remembered picking up rocks on the paddocks before school, the land was owned by a Doctor,& the family lived in Rule's Cottage.

Her parents were John & Eliza Bond Rule.

Does anyone have any information or photos of Rule Cottage or the name of the Doctor?

Kim, The local Library for Okehampton may be able to give you some info or some guidance where to look for what you're seeking....

The 1881 census may give you the name of the doctor if you found John & Eliz's house then looked at the neighbours...it would say medical pract. or something like that for the occupation.

Hi Kim,

In 1851 I do find Rule's Cottage listed. It is at Bridestowe (Okehampton District, about 7 miles from Okehampton) It does not appear to be just one premises. George VEAL - Lime Quarry Lab is at no 1, James RULE head - stone mason is at no 2 - Eliza's father, Daniel RULE - Ag Lab is a no 3,  Thomas BROOKS - Lime Quarry Lab is at no 4.

In 1841 Eliza and her family are also listed at Rules Cottage Bridestowe (3 premises all listed as Rules Cottage)

1871 I find your family listed at

RG10/2153 Folio 15 Page 6
Higher Bowden
Okehampton

GLIDDON John Head 42 Mar b Northlew Farm Lab
GLIDDON Eliza 39 Mar b Bridestow
GLIDDON Vinson Son 13 b Okehampton Farm Lab
GLIDDON John Henry Son 10 b Okehampton
GLIDDON Priscila Dau 8 b Okehampton
GLIDDON Philip Mark Son 1 1/2 b Okehampton
PENGELLY George Lodger 18 b Sourton Railway Lab

(They were at the same address in 1861 with the two eldest boys. No lucky finding Rules Cottage or Eliz'a parents)

at Rules Cottage Bridestowe in 1871 RG10/2153 Folio 108 Page 1, I find Solomon HOOPER - ag lab is at no 1, Samuel VEAL - Lab is at no 2, George RULE - pauper is at no 3, William DAWE - wheelright is at no 4, William WHITE - mason is at no 5. I do not see a doctor in Bridestowe (there is a Surgeons widow at the parsonage)

1881 I don't see your family - At Rules Cottage Bridestow 1881 is George MILLMAN - Lab, Samuel WHITE - Mason (Rulis Cottage)

Cheers Kris  Smiley
