Matthew Finnegan b 1836 d 1925
« on: Monday 14 September 09 16:55 UTC (UK) »

Hello!

I'm looking for information on Matthew Finnegan and his wife whose maiden name might have been McGinn.
The connection is with the family McCabe from around Mountnugent.

Grateful for any pointers! Thanks.

This is most likely him in 1911 Census

Matthew Finnegan 1911 Census

This is griffiths valuation for Pollareagh towland. Griffiths was taken around 1850's and is not a census but is more a list of those head of families who held/rented land/property.

Appears that Matthew named his only son Charles so perhaps Matthew's father was the Charles in Griffiths.

Pollareagh Griffiths Valuation

Also i have found the birth of Bridget Finnegan 20-Mar-1881 Pollereagh, Cavan, Ireland daughter of Matthew Finnegan & Margaret McGuinn

It also appears that Charles Finnegan born 1884 in the correct area died in Jan-Mar 1929 according to the LDS Pilot site. So died quiet young.

This appears to be the McCabe family in Crossrah, Kibride which is right next to Pollereagh and the village of Mountnugent. Has a Bridget Finnegan living with them as a servant.

Found this website for the parish of Kilbride

Hi!

Wonderful! This is most definitely in the right area.

You wouldn't believe how many spellings I know of Crossrah, Crossragh, Crosreagh, Crossra!! Thank goodness for computers which can see through the differences.

Thanks for the help.
Put it in context: my wife was born at Crossragh.

Hi!

I'm back...

Ger: having found the likely Margaret McGuinn, I'm trying to check-out the family story that she emigrated to the US and then came back, thereafter marrying Finnegan and rearing 2 children late in life. The dates don't seem to preclude such a scenario - e.g. if she was back in Ireland by about 1880.

I've tried enquiries on immigration and shipping lists but with singular lack of success.
I've not yet found any footprints in the US either.
Do you have any expertise in these directions too?

Alf
