James Adie Ewing
« on: Monday 01 June 09 07:13 UTC (UK) »

I am working on a Roll of Honour of Scotland's WW1 dead - currently working through c. 7,000 Argylls. James Adie Ewing was a Second Lieutenant who was killed on 31 July 1917 but I have so far been unable to get a handle on his age. Army records are unhelpful other than to give his father's address in Dundee. James was buried in Ypres.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thank you very much. I am certain that will be him - just the right age for a Second Lieutenant from WW1. Not many got to be much older.

Army Officer records from that war are very lacking in detail if they exist at all and in this case all we get is his father shown as A Ewing, Bonnyman House, Nelson Street, Dundee.

Hi Alastair

If I can offer you some advice on this worthwhile project you are doing. Ev, like I did the other day on Hercules Farquharson, used the free search facility on Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  You can register free on SP, you only have to buy units if you want to view the search results and view an image. Once you have registered, you can do a search on names and you will see how many entries show and you can narrow down by area/ years etc. Obviously helps where middle names were used on birth registrations or unusual names like Hercules  Roll Eyes

With your access to Ancestry, you will hopefully then be able to identify the men's families.

Pam and Monica

Thank you.

I suspect I will pop up again. I have only reached 'E' in the Argylls out of 7000 dead. I already know that the Royal Scots lost 10,600 men.
