William Marcus Kirkpatrick Flack is an elusive ancestor ! Born about 1872. Family legend says Ireland but opn the 1911 census he states Clerkenwell. This is the only census I have. I have a marriage cert of 29.05.1898 - he married Louisa Pattison in St Pancras. Anyone else heard of him ?

Hi and welcome to rootschat.
have you looked in freebmd to see if there are any children's births listed? The surname is not common- well, as far as I am aware that is so which is helpful.
On the point of anyone else looking for him, you could check out the Surname Interests site of RC... click on Surnames button at the top of this page..

On the 1911 - young William aged 11 - born St Pancras. Marriage at St Marys Somerstown, St Pancras May 29th 1898 No 420 Address of both - 8 Drummond Crescent William is a cook, son of William Flack, silversmith, although this may have been an "adopted" father. The family think he was actually the son of an Irish actress in Dublin, but this does not tally with his 1911 declaration. I wonder if it was William snr who was the Dubliner (although evidence seems to disprove this!) ?

Searching the 1901 census for a William born 1900 Pancras wirth parents William and Louisa, I happened across a William READE, and on checking the family's address it appears to be Drummond Crescent. RG13/146 10 11 22 Drummond Crescent William Reade, head, mar, 30, Valet, b. Clerkenwell Louisa, wife, 26, b. do. William, son, 1, b. Pancras
I'm not at all saying this is them - just posting a remotely possible candidate, in the absence of any other match.

This might help (or may not )

Extracted:
"While working through the newly released 1911 census for England I realised that I/we had got two William Flack's son of William Flack confused. On the basis of the latest available evidence the William Frederick Flack who married Violet Ethel Chapple is the son of William Flack and Annie Banfield, leaving me to find a new home for the William Flack who married Louisa Matilda Patterson that I had down as their son. According to the marriage certificate for William Flack and Louisa Matilda Patterson on 29 May 1898 in St Mary’s Somers Town, St Pancras, London his father William Flack was a silversmith. Now there is only one Flack silversmith that I know of and that is William Abraham Flack husband of Nancy Harper / Jane Sleeman, so I guess my missing William (born abt 1871 Clerkenwell) is the son of his son William (1855-1888) though I have no record that this William was a silversmith like this father. I have not yet come across a birth entry or a baptism record for a William son of William to support this.
According to the database William Flack, born 11 Jul 1855 son of William Abraham Flack and Nancy Harper married Elizabeth Jane Hooper on 13 Nov 1882 in Melbourne, Australia. No details are given on the database for this marriage record - if you have a copy of the marriage certificate or access to the marriage record is there any indication that William Flack was married before? Have we in fact got the right parents for the William Flack who married Elizabeth Jane Hooper - are his parents given on his death certificate for example? Does his death certificate indicate that he was married twice? Any help anyone can offer with this gap in my knowledge would be most gratefully received.
One other mystery: when William Frederick Flack married Violet Ethel Chapple he was a widower. I now need to find details of his first marriage – does anyone know?"

This may of course tie in with your theory of him being adopted. Is this family legend or based on some other knowledge?

I have the Flack / PattISon marriage cert, and assumed it to be the one relating to my husband's grandfather, William Marcus Kirkpatrick Flack ( this name gleaned from the death certificate). Everything else ties up, especially the Louisa connection. William and Louisa had 6 children and ended up with them in Rochester, Kent. Everyone seems to think that "Bill" was a very clever gentleman, although there seems to be shady dealings going on before he suddenly leaves London about 1914. He died in 1933. I have never heard of an Australian connection.

An elderly relative who has since died told me that her family lived in the same road in Dublin and took Bill in when his mother, another Louise, couldn't look after him. He became one of the family. These (she said) were Ann Francis Flack and her husband, who later took the whole family with them to London to find work. She said that Bill became a coal merchant in Britannia Street. So family lore has him as an Irish coalman. silversmith, and London major domo who could speak 7 languages, wrote a Bible which is now in the British Museum and who ended up as a jobbing labourer in Kent. I despair !
