Accident - Prices Candle Factory - Arthur Thomas
« on: Monday 01 June 09 10:57 UTC (UK) »

This is a long shot but who knows someone might be able to solve this mystery

According to family heresay, Arthur Thomas, b. 1889, Battersea died in an accident at Price's Candle Factory. No idea when. No idea where the factory would be either. Any suggestions would be welcome.

In 1911 as his parents are dead and he is living with his aunt and uncle in Balham  - his occupation is 'Art Dyer'.

Thanks

Hi,

A quick search on the internet gives 2 factory sites;  Vauxhall and York Road, Wandsworth.

Did Arthur marry?  Might give some more clues but his death certificate is the way to go.

Is 1911 census the last "sighting" of him?

Hi Laurina

Prices have a detailed history on their website:

http://www.prices-candles.co.uk/history/historydetail.asp

Originally based in Vauxhall and Battersea (from about 1830) they subsequently built a factory on Merseyside and between the 3 sites employed about 2300 people (about half being child labour!)

Hi Nanny Jane and DB10,

I don't know if Arthur married or when he died, I've been unable to find his death. My line follow his sister Lily. The last 'sighting' I have is the 1911 census, he is 22, single, and living with an aunt and uncle. I don't know if it was a major incident in the factory that caused his death or a isolated accident - maybe it made the papers. Guess I'll have to look for a death in Wandsworth area, pity it's such a common name!

Thanks for the info about Price's factory DB - very interesting.
