Seeking any descendants of this family who migrated to Montreal from Glasgow around 1911. They originated in and around Aberdeen, Scotland. They were William Fowler, Alexander, James Milne, Bessie (have now found her grave) Margaret Philip (their widowed mother) and Barbara who was married to a Gavin MCCallum Grateful for any help. Ian

Thank you so much for the helpful information. Bessie is buried in Little Lake Cemetery, Peterborough, Ontario as is her husband John Haswall Watson. I have no details of any family. Alexander did join the CEF - as did several other Fowler family, including my great uncle. I am no searching the directories and will let you know the progress. Thanks again, Ian

Hello, Bessie Fowler is my mother's mother. My mother was one of 6 children - John Haswell Jr. Watson(went by Jackie),Alexander Gavin Watson(went by Tim), Frederick Fowler Watson, George McCalllum Watson (went by Pete) Bessie Fowler Watson (went by Betty( married Rappel) and Dorothy June Watson (married Addyman) All boys were born in Montreal and 2 girls born in Peterborough. All children, except my mother ( the youngest) are deceased. Jackie and Pete both moved to California in the late 40s, early 50s and remained there where they are both buried. Betty is buried in Saskatchewan. Tim and Fred are buried in Peterborough Ontario. If you would like to know more let me know. I would appreciate receiving what you know to date and would be interested in your connection to the family.
Bessie's sister , Mary Fox, remained in Scotland but sent her son Victor Fox to Montreal where he remained. Kim

Hi Kim, Yes, we are from the same Fowler family. I have tried three times to send you some photos but unable to do so. My em is to comply with rootschat policy the e-mail address has been removed - please use the PM facility - Global Moderator and if you sent me yours it would be much easier to correspond. I have a mass of info. on our family, but not too much on the Montreal line. I do know about Mary Fox, and she did remarry. There were originally, four Fowler brothers, William, Alexander, James and George. You are linked with William and I am linked with Alexander. I have a few photos of Mary. There was another sister, Margaret who remained in Scotland. She married a Sinclair. I believe there are a number of this family still in Scotland, but appear not really interested. There really is much to tell you. Hear from you soon. Best wishes, Ian Fowler

Hello Kim, I appreciate you may have some of the following, but here it is anyway. If I have worked things out correctly your great great great grandparents were Alexander Fowler and Jane Angus. They were married in Inverurie, Scotland in 1820. William, their first son was born in 1820 and in 1856 he married a Barbara Tytler. They had two children William and Alexander. William b 1856, Alexander 1859. William m Margaret Philip Milne in 1876-they had seven children, of whom Bessie was one. The others were Barbara, Mary Jane Tytler, William, Alexander, Margaret and James Milne. Barbara, Mary and Margaret were all married in early 1900's. In 1910 William, wife of Margaret Milne died. Then in 1911/12 all the family, including Margaret Milne migrated to Montreal. Mary and Margaret remained. Barbara was married to a Gavin McCallum. Mary to Peter Fox and Margaret to Peter Sinclair. Mary's ran a successful florists business in Glasgow. Her husband died in early 1920's. She moved to England at some point, and in 1931 she remarried. He second husband was Solomon Stephens a successful baker etc in Plymouth, Devon. The are reputed to have been very happy and travelled considerably. Mary died in 1952 in Plymouth, Solomon having predeceased her. There are quite a number of Sinclair descendants in Scotland but they are not interested. I believe James Milne may have returned to England around 1914 (maybe to join the forces in WW1) and then returned to Canada in 1919. I have photos of Mary and various certificated etc which I can email you. I also found an entry for Bessie's marriage. I can add a lot more detail to this information. Turning briefly to Alexander b 1859. He was married to an Ida Laing - they had 11 children. Sadly, all but three died in infancy. They were three girls, Violet, Ida and Bathridge Jane. Violet and Ida both migrated to USA through I believe Toronto. I have a suspicion Bathridge may have done the same but can't yet find her. I can expand a bit on this but not greatly. I do have a photograph of Alexander and Jane. My cousin in Shropshire has much information on George and James and is happy to be in contact. I think I sent you my email by PM-let me know if it arrived-I am still grappling with modern technology. Best wishes, Ian Fowler

Hi Kim, (bikerbabe) Looking forward to hearing from you. Reference Violet and Ida - I do have their obituaries, and in the case of Violet I am pretty sure there are some decendants, wherabouts unknown. Possibly California. I am working on this one. Best wishes, Ian

Ian, I am sorry but i haven't had an opportunity to respond until now. I just finished reading some of your messages but am unable to open some of them. I had heard about Mary Fox and her floral business. I am going to check about one of Bessie's brothers who i think ended up in New York City....i don't think he married. Kim

Hi Bikerbabe, So good to hear from you. Please let me know if you need any info repeated. For some reason I cannot send my photos -probably too large. The information on the two Watson brothers continues to arrive. You may know George McCallum junior in California. I think he has several children and I have written to him. Also progress on Violet Peters, (cousin to Bessie) I am happy to send you my email which might make things easier. Do you have any photos of Bessie and family. Best wishes, Ian

Ian George is Pete's son - Pete had 2 boys and 2 girls. His wife's name was Ann. I haven't seen George since we were kids. Jackie had no children. He lived in California with his second wife Army. They had a second home in Palm Springs. Kim

Ian, I said that i thought a brother went to New York City and had no children. I have verified that is incorrect - it was Bessie's husband's brother Fred Watson who went - so you can ignore that. To clarify re the descendants of Bessie's 2 sons who went to California. Pete as i have mentioned had 4 children - the one found is the eldest - his name is George McCallum. The other children are Mary, Donna, and Donald. George married. Mary married an Ortez. Bessie's daughter, Bessie( Betty) Rappel had 3 children - Mary, John, and another daughter (forget her name, sorry) Another son, Alexander (Tim) had one daughter Jane. (no children) Another son, Fred had 2 children - Carol Anne (no children)and Bob(deceased, no children) As i mentioned before - Jackie in California had no children. My mother- Bessie's youngest - had me (Kim, with 1 daughter), my sister (Linda with 1 daughter and 2 granddaughters) and my brother, Dean (now deceased, and 1 son, deceased). Kim

Ian, More info on the Bessie Fowler's sons (i have my mother here providing me info!) Pete Watson was in the Canadian Air Force during the war and was transferred to RAF (he was a navigator) Alexander( or Tim) was a lieutenant in Ordinance Core. Fred was stationed in Burma as flight lieutenant in the Canadian Air Force. (winner of Distinguished Flying Cross) At the time of the war, Jackie was with General Electric.
Bessie's mother Margaret Milne is buried in Montreal at Mount Royal. I believe the rest of Bessie's family (who came to Montreal )are buried there. Bessie's sister Barbara McCallum had a son, John, who died in the flu epidemic in Montreal at age 19 and is buried in Montreal. She had another daughter, Barbara, and a son, George.

Kim, All received. It is so good your mother has good recall. I will digest all the info you sent and get back to you. Perhaps at a later date we can exchange some photos. I'm sure your mum would like to see Mary Jane Fox (Fowler). If allowed I will attach a photo of myself. Talk soon, Ian
