Suffolk wills
« on: Monday 01 June 09 23:15 UTC (UK) »

I know how to order a will but can anyone tell me if there is a way to find out if a person definitely left a will?
Does the Suffolk record office have records of who left wills?
Thankyou for your time.

The index books can be searched - free - at th eProbate Office in Holborn London for Wills and Letters of Admin.
I think some record offices do hold some indexes too - but if you are ever in London the Holborn place is well worth a visit!
Like you I am in Essex - and I once took a trip there with a list of everyone I could think of from my tree and there date of death or approx time of death, and did a session looking for Will for them all, whatever part of the country. With reasonable success despite many being  poor, and with some amazing discoveries!
Good luck!

Hi Liz
Going to London is not an option for me, so I think it will be a case of sending off for the will I want and hoping it exists Cheesy
Many thanks for your answer

Some Wills are listed on the A2A web site, which is now accessed via the National Archives web site.
I found a couple of our Suffolk Wills that way and was surprised to find one of my Berkshsire family had left a Will - I think it was about GBP 3.50 to download.

Might be worth putting in the name of your ancestor to find out if indeed a Will exists and then you can decide which way to go ?

I recently found the 1653 Will of one of my ancestors in the Documents Online section of the National Archives.  As Pat says, it costs about £3.50 to download a copy.  It was really exciting to find this, and I've also had a lot of help from RC'ers in deciphering it!  In fact, I had so much fun, I think I'll go back there  now and have another rummage....

Best of luck,

Hi Carol

What is the name and rough year he died? If after 1858, they should be at the Probate Office in London but if it was before, you would have to know which court but then again Suffolk RO in Lowestoft has indexes of Suffolk wills. Or try the A2A website.

Hi Ben, Pat, suffolkmawther and Greensleeves
Thankyou for the information you have all given me I will certainly look on the A2A site and try putting their names in.
I am looking for Humphrey King of Wickhambrook who died in 1949 and I also want to see if his wife Jane Amelia King who died in 1929 made a will, she was left the family house by her Father in 1910 for her and her heirs and I think from memory it said she could not sell it. So my thinking was she might have made a will to make sure her four daughters did not argue Cheesy

Many thanks for all your help

Hi

In that case a 1929 and 1949 will should be at the Probate Office in High Holborn in London. It might be a good idea to perhaps check one or two years after their years of death in case there was a delay in the will being proven.

Thankyou Ben, I will take a chance and send off for their wills and hope they made one Grin as I can not get to London.
Is it likely that a woman in 1929 would have made a will?
Thankyou

Every possibility Carol, one that I downloaded via A2A a couple of years ago was made by one of our Susannah's in the 1800s - we then discovered that all the property the family held came from her  Cheesy

Hi all
I sent off for the two wills and recently received them back Grin Jane Amelia King left her house to her husband for his use during his life time together with her investments after his death the house was to be sold and the money realised together with her investments was to be divided between her four daughters, Mabel Georgina, Rose Elgerina, Beatrice May and Jessie Elizabeth Jane. Unfortunately two months after she wrote her will Jessie died aged 3 months. For some reason she never made another will so her two daughters born after her will was made were not mentioned.
Humphrey King divided his money between his two daughters Winnifred Jane and Elisie Irene his daughter Beatrice was named as executor and not named in the will.
Is there any way I can find out when the house was sold and what it made?
many thanks for all your help so far
