Who is Norman Carne & why do we have his photo?

I don't want to hijack Girdleses thread so I'm starting a new one.
My ggg grandmother Ann Cowley was baptised 22 Oct 1802 in Haughton le Skerne the daughter of William Cowley and Alice Brown of Stranton. I have been unable to find a find a marriage between William & Alice but a William Cowley did marry a Lettice Brown 06 July 1800 at Kelloe.
According to the 1851 census ( HO107 piece 2384 folio 686 page 4) Lettice was born in Stranton abt 1780 but I've been unable to find a baptism for Alice/Lettice or any trace of Alice Brown/Cowley.
I've used Lettice on my working tree on A******y but would be grateful if anyone could suggest how I can confirm if Alice is a mistake in the register or how to proceed with this. Hope this makes sense

So where was Wiliam born, and does that tie in with what you know.
Also on the marriage certificate you have does it state where they were living at time?
As this parish, also the kids baptisms, do any have where alice/lettice was born like you can find in Bishop Barrington period.

Hi, thank you for your replies. I've looked on film at Darlington which was difficult to read but the Bishops Transcript for Ann's baptism was much clearer (Haughton le Skerne image 96 when the site's back up) The full entry reads " Ann Cowley 1st daughter of William Cowley of Nedhouse, hind to Mrs Mason, Barmpton, native of Smeaton, Yorkshire by his wife Alice Brown, native of Stranton" Ann gives Barmpton as her place of birth on 1851 census.
The IGI has a baptism for a William Cowley in Great Smeaton 27 April 1776, I have not yet checked this, but it's the only Cowley baptism in Great Smeaton and the Cowleys appear to come from Aycliffe.
William and Lettice had a son William baptised (from memory, site still down and I lost the saved images when my computer broke) on their wedding day 06 July 1800, Kelloe.
William died 15 March 1849 in Sadberge and I have a possible death for Lettice 29 Oct 1869 in Aske.
Others with William & Lettice have another child, Mary, b1810 I have no details of her as yet. I have contacted others with William & Lettice in their trees but have had either no reply or the whole Lettice/Alice query has been ignored.
