Please, Any Advice Suggestions re CBS
« on: Tuesday 02 June 09 10:23 BST (UK) »

Hi All,

I am NSW Australia based, so I apologise in advance if my request for advice and suggestions may at first glance seem to be unrelated to Buckinghamshire, but from this distance, I think it is.

At the Online index for TNA it indicates that at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies there are archival records relating to the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1, Harefield Park, Middlesex.    These records would perhaps be in the "Roscoe" files.

I am a direct descendant of an Australian soldier who served in France and was wounded 4 May 1917 at Bullecourt.  He was treated at that hospital and then stationed there for much of the duration of his overseas duties.

Apparently in the "Roscoe" files at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies there are many letters, photos, and various issues of the monthly magazine that was published at that hospital during 1916-1918 - with contributions from patients and staff.

I would like to know how to find out more about the contents of those archives, and perhaps check if there is any mention of or even perhaps a photo of my late grandfather.  His only daughter is still living (aged closer to 100 years than most of us  Grin) and so I will not post his surname here (but of course I can pm it  Wink ).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions as to how I can learn more about life at Harefield Park particularly in the period when Grandfather was stationed there.

Hi,

Thank you hepburn for those links, unfortunately, both the Australian War Memorial and the National Library of Australia's resources do not include the archive details that The National Archives online index indicates are held at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies.

The AWM has very good holdings on the nurses at Harefield Park Auxiliary Hospital, and lots background material which of course I had already shared with my mother.

However, I am hoping that RChatters would be able to  let me know more about the ROSCOE archives at the Centre for Buckingham Studies, hence this thread on the Buckinghamshire boards.

Cheers,

JM

Bit More

EDIT TO ADD

At that website I read:

"We regret that we are unable to offer a research service.  We are happy to answer basic enquiries, but any in-depth research will be returned to the enquirer.

For those people who are not able to visit us in person, it is suggested that you contact an independent record searcher instead. "......etc
