Cockpit Theatre, Bridgnorth
« on: Thursday 27 August 09 16:42 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but I'm currently researching the history of the 'Cockpit Theatre' in Bridgnorth for a museum exhibition. I know it was used as a theatre 1811-24 but I'm finding it difficult to find out anything more. According to a website I found 'A History of the theatres of Bridgnorth' by C.F Gwilt could possibly be helpful but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I was just wondering if anyone would be able to help either with information on the theatre or where I could find the book/pamphlet?
Thank you

Hi Laurella,

I have a copy of the booklet you mention. There are just several paragraphs about the former Cock Pit theatre in Bridgnorth. I believe the structure was transferred to Bromsgrove Avoncroft Museum.
I'll send you a personal message.

Thank you all for your help, I don't know much about Shropshire so I didn't really know where to start but this has all been very useful!
Gwynne, anything you could tell me from the pamphlet would be really helpful, Avoncroft is the museum I'm researching for and can't find that much on it from the resources there so far.  Any minor details will be useful right now!
Thanks again,

I also found this in an article about the New Theatre:

The New Theatre, which opened on 11 December 1824, was a replacement for the Cockpit Theatre, which had thrived, under the direction of "livewire actor Charles Stanton," from 11 March 1811 to 16 February 1824.

There was also a theatre if I am correct, where the post office buildings are at Postern Gate in Bridgnorth. This is why the pub on the other side of the road is called the Shakespeare. I have no idea what this theatre looked like though.
It must have been demolished when the PO Buildings were erected whenever that was?

I am also trying to research the cockpit theatre. There are some great photo's of it on www.flickr.com

Im off to Avoncroft in the next few weeks to take some pics of my own, if there are any you'd like in particular drop me an email.
