The 'Ragged School' Oswestry,Shropshire.
« on: Tuesday 25 August 09 19:26 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

My father attended a school in Oswestry,  circa 1914 - 1923, which he referred to as the 'The Ragged School'.

From what I can gather, the school was on the right , at the top of Castle street, leading onto Willow street.

Just wondered if anyone out there has any info or had an ancestor who went to that school.

Also, I'd like to know if there are any photo's anywhere showing the old place.

Cheers
Barbara.

A 'ragged school' is another name for a 'free school'...

Here's an 18th C schoolmaster at Oswestry:

Good luck,

Hi Barbara

My Grandmother also went to The Ragged School. She was born in 1906 and would have left school when she was 14, so she must have been there the same time as your father. Her family lived at 64 Castle Street - in those days it was a corner shop run by her mother, but is now a family home. My father does have a school photo somewhere showing my grandmother and her class, but it only shows a wall of the building in the background rather than the building itself I'm afraid!

Regards

Helen

Hi  Smiley

Could I suggest that you contact the Oswestry Local Studies Library:

The librarian there is fantastic and has helped me so many times.

Hello Helen,

thanks very much for your reply.

As you say, your Gran, although a little bit older, would have attended the Ragged School at the same time as my parents.

MyDad was born in 1909 and my Mum in 1912 so they both would have been at the school between 1914 and 1925.

You're very lucky to have a picture of your Gran, I don't have one of my Mum or Dad when they were young, which is why I hoped I might have been able to find someone who had a copy of a school photo that may have featured them.

Thank you for the info anyway.

Barbara.

Hi there Gadget,

Thanks for the reply and your suggestion to contact Oswestry Library.

I have contacted the Library from time to time and always found them very helpful so I might just ask if they have any photographic records from the school in the era I'm interested in.

You never know !!

Cheers

Barbara.
