My brick wall William Webber was born c1806-1811 in South Molton. William arrived in Aus 1858. His shipping documents show his parents as William and Grace Webber. I have been unable to locate William's baptism. William married Elizabeth Edworthy 08 Aug 1835 at Sth. Molton. Elizabeth Edworthy born 1805 in Lapford. The 1851 census show William (pauper), an inmate of the Sth Molton Union Workhouse with his 3 young daughters. His wife Elizabeth was able to stay in the family's cottage by taking in a lodger. Any help appreciated.

Did Williams wife and 3 daughters all emigrate with him? If so I wonder how they could afford it.

Hi nalani
Welcome to Rootschat
Are you sure William's parents are Grace and William? Only there is a Grace and John of suitable age to be his parents in South Molton in 1841. Only one baptism for children of this couple in South Molton a Sarah in 1811. In 1841 they have a George and Harriot with them who may be other children.
There are 4 submitted entries on the IGI (to be treated with caution but they do have dates so may be correct) for children of a John and Grace baptised in Eggesford (about 10 miles south of South Molton) which include William Webber on 11 May 1806. There is also a Richard 1810 and a John 1812 and suitable candidates for both of them in South Molton in 1841. In 1861 there is a Richard born Chulmleigh c1812 (Eggesford is a stone's throw from Chulmleigh) living in South Molton.
This could all be coincidence as South Molton appears to be entirely populated by Webbers but worth further investigation

Your William and Elizabeth are living in Burrington, South Molton in 1841. Widowed John is living with the George mentioned in above reply in Burrington in 1861. George gives his birthplace as Burrington. Burrington is south of South Molton about 5 mile north of Eggesford.

Hello Jan,
Even though William's parents were shown as Grace and William on his shipping records, I've never been certain. I say this because William's wife's mother was incorrectly named, that stopped me in my tracks for quite a while.
William and Elizabeth had a daughter named Harriet (my grt grandmother). I have applied for six birth certs., haven't found her yet.
