I think this might be the couple who were in Chard in 1851 but both born in Dorset ?  James in Tolpuddle and Ann in Litten ?

That's correct, both born Dorset, I just cannot find them in 1861!  I found him in 1871 a widow, so know she had died by then, but where were they in 1861?  I think their name may have been mis-transcribed or something.  Just wondered if anyone had the 1861 census for Chard and came across them.....

Re: 1871 census entry you mention.

Do I have the right entry as I can't find one in Chard in 1871

The only widower James Hammett b Tolpuddle was a bricklayer aged 59 so b 1812 and he was living in Tolpuddle.  16yr old son Samuel  b Tolpuddle living with him

Carole - hi  Smiley

RG10. P. 2405  Fol 92  Pg. 63

He's the right age, and he's living in Chard  ( Union Workhouse)  but he's saying born Chard  Undecided  Roll Eyes

If the family stayed in Chard after the 1851 census, I wonder where Ann died, because I can't see a death in Chard  Undecided

I wondered whether that ruled him out - but maybe he had settlement in Chard ?  Most of the people in that workhouse seem to come from Somerset, so perhaps it was a requirement and he lied ?  Or maybe it's not him   Undecided

I think it is the right one and he lied about his birthplace or was ill and the Workhouse used guesswork for the census

He had lived in Chard for at least 20yrs by 1871 and there is no other James Hammett b Chard with that birthyear

There is a FreeBMD Death regn:

Sep 1864   (>99%)
EMMETT  Ann    Chard  5c 313

However, the Chard St Mary Burials Register corresponding entry reads:
No 812 09 Jul 1864 Ann HAMMETT aged 63 of Old Town, Chard.

Hi Folks

Many thanks for finding the census under Emmett and Ann's burial for me.  Did you happen to come across a burial for James in St Mary's too?  I think in some census it was just taken for granted folks came from that county etc, especially as in the workhouse. Once again many thanks.

I can't identify a likely death in FreeBMD for James;  neither can I find him after 1871 Census.  I can't see a Chard St Mary burial for him between 1871 and 1894, so it looks likely that he did not remain in the Chard Union.
