Margaret McKenna and the poorhouse
« on: Tuesday 02 December 08 20:51 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
I have been trying to find information on my great, great, great grand-mother and have found out that Margaret McKenna was born 1852 in Kilmarnock, Ayreshire and died 1906 in Irvine Ayrshire. On her death record it says she died in the poorhouse. On the 1881 and 1891 census records it has her as living in HM Bath Place Ayr as a bonnet knitter. We are unsure if she was working in the prison or there at her majesty's pleasure. Also, why was she in the poorhouse. Would anyone have any ideas on finding out why she was in the prison or in the poorhouse in 1906 in Irvine?
Her husband was John Russell Gray, her father James McKenna.
Many thanks,

Hi Travlet

Just putting the link to other post on Margaret www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,340534.0.html

On the census entries I found for her she does show as prisoner rather than working there. As I also mentioned in the previous post, your best route would be through the Ayrshire Archives once they reopen following their relocation of offices www.ayrshirearchives.org.uk/index.html. Not sure whether in the meantime The Mitchell Library in Glasgow would be worth checking to see whether they hold either poor relief application records for Ayr (for both Margaret and the two boys) or criminal records for the Ayr prison. I would also imagine it would be worthwhile checking the National Archives of Scotland to see what original records they may hold. I did check their catalogue for any criminal proceedings but couldn't see anything of note www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/

Hard to know the reason why's without looking at some of the records that may remain for her.
