COMPLETED - Married an American in London 1960
« on: Tuesday 02 June 09 22:46 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I have been trying to trace my birth mother and through Ancestry I discovered that she married an American Airman who was serving in England, in London in 1960. Also through Ancestry I found her death record in California, she died in 1990  Cry

Can anyone tell me if there is anywhere I can search to find out when she moved to the States and whereabouts? The man my BM married (not my father) was born in Donaldsville, Louisiana and he has also passed away, in 2005. From his obit I know that both my BM & her hubbie's ashes were interred in Honolulu.

Any info you could give me would be very gratefully recieved.

Thanks

Kim

Kim,

Check for their deaths on SSDI (social security death index)

http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

if you have not.  This has info on where SS card was issued and last residence.  This might give you some additional data points.

Thanks Nick

I just tried that and even though I have her SS number (from California Death Index) and could do an advanced search, it came up with nothing  Sad

Most peculiar

Thanks anyway

Kim, my father passed away a few years ago (in California).  I have not seen his name on the SSDI yet.  We are Canadian; I've been wondering if there is some glitch.

Hi Lisa

Thanks for the info - was your father an American citizen? I'm guessing if they had SS numbers they must've been. Just a thought that on citizens would be included but I think I have answered my own question!!!

I looked on the probelm solving section and there are a few reasons why my mother and possibly your father are not on there:

Death was not reported to SS Administration (Huh??)
The person did not participate in the SS program (they wouldn't have an SS number then would they?)
Survivor death benefits were/are being paid to dependents or spouse (my mothers husband survived her by 15 years)
Human error (great!!!)

Back to the drawing board Roll Eyes

Thanks for responding

Hi Kim:

We moved down to the states a long time ago, but no one in our family became American citizens.

Anyone who works in the states (legally) has to have a Social Security number (this started in the 1950's???).  This includes permanent aliens.

Thank you for your help.  My mum is still alive, so that would explain why my father's name is not available!

I am trying to help someone else with some California information, but after I finish that, if there is anything that I might try for you, I'd be happy to (feel free to pm me with details).  [However, I don't have much luck with events in Southern California, unfortunately.]

Hi Lisa

Thanks for your generous offer but I don't really think there's anything that I need to find out in CA. I know my mother had another daughter who I have tracked down but I don't know where she was born which is why I wanted to know where my mother moved to initially(thought it may be where my half sister was born)

Think I'm  fishing around so that I can put off contacting her - it's so scary as I really don't know if she knows of my existence!

Thanks also for the info regarding SS numbers - maybe my mother isn't on there as her husband died only a couple of years ago.

Thanks again

Does his obit mention his Air Force service?  Service records  would show his postings, and if he was career rather than just 4-6 year enlistee, they could be very helpful.  Unfortunately, since you are not related to him, they might not release them to you.

If he was career Air Force then their burial in Hawaii might imply stationing there after his return from England.  Otherwise it could just be that they just vacationed there periodically.

As you know, the recent (last 50 years) time frame you are dealing with makes this search difficult.

Do you want to post names so that we can see what might turn up?

Dear All

Rootschat doesn't allow the posting of information about living or very recently deceased people, so if you can help with this enquiry it should be by Personal Message.  Naturally, general guidance is allowed!

Many thanks.

Arranroots,

Thanks for pointing that out.  I knew about the reasonable ban on posting names of living people, but had never heard it expressed for the deceased.

Hi Nick

His obit says that he was a certified aircraft mechanic and a U.S. Airforce veteran so I assume he was career not just an enlistee though he may have worked for a commercial airline after leaving the USAF. As you say, I'm no relation to him so I really wouldn't think that the authorities would allow me to see his records.

I know where he was stationed in the UK (from the marriage cert) which is RAF Woodbridge  & Bentwaters and have posted on the excellent 'twin bases' website but have had no response.

Thanks for your interest and very helpful suggestions.

Arranroots - my mother died in 1990 so I'm assuming it would be ok to post her name on here? Her husband was only in 2005, would that be too recently deceased? Like Nick I thought the ruling was just for living persons which I can totally appreciate - but I  certainly don't want to break any rules, or cause any upset.

Kind regards

Kim

Hi Kim

The rules for Rootschat is 1920s onwards ( as defined by the site owners) as a rough guideline, although I'm aware that US records and many BMDs online are much more recent.

My concern is for your step-family - who might not be aware of the deaths - and that we stick to the rules generally.

As mentioned before, there's no harm in  discussing by PM or in offering general advice.

I hope that clarifies for you?

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi Arranroots

Crickey, i was way out!!!

Thats no problem, and I completely understand. I really wouldn't want to cause anyone any upset at all. As I'm sure you've realised I am relatively new to this very addicitve & absorbing hobby!

Thanks for your guidance

Thanks for your understanding Kim.

It is hard to be categorical about dates, so use the "last 70 years" guidance for births and marriages.  Deaths are a bit different - just that living relatives might be shocked to read them here first!  We do try to be careful for this reason.

This discussion has promoted the Mods to think again about posting clearer guidelines, so it has been useful in that respect!

I have now made contact with my half sister in California and know my birth mothers 'story'. Thanks to all who responded.
