Is there some kind soul who can please advise me re the publication, Officers and Graduates of University and King's College Aberdeen 1495-1860, Peter John ANDERSON, 1893.
On page 154 appears a reference to Charles Cropper WEBB.
Is this publication available only in the University Archives?
Are there other lists readily available which might furnish me with further details re Charles Cropper WEBB? I am trying to prove he is the same Charles WEBB (c1795-1848) surgeon, of Oxford.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Jill
As regards the book it appears to have been republished in 2008 with a different number of pages to the original so the page reference may not be the same. This does mean that there are now a lot more copies than the original run of 500 or so.
The ISBN (10) I found for it: 1437142028
It is for sale in Australia http://www.scribblygumbooks.com.au/9781437142020.html
There is a listing of Charles Webb in Pigots http://www.headington.org.uk/oxon/doctors/lists/doctors.htm
If you find this man in the 1841 census at St Giles Street you may be able to find out where he was born, his age and any family he had with him to work out if he is the one for whom you are searching.

The Charles Webb I found in Oxford appears to have been matriculated at the university there.

Do you have any more details on the man you are looking for?

Charles WEBB, surgeon of Oxford, married Elizabeth SPEAKMAN and had amongst their 11 children, the well-renowned artist and architect, Philip Speakman WEBB. This family appears assured - it is just the anomaly of him never having used his second given name, which I would have thought would have been more than acceptable in those times.

It is a little odd. I would imagine the two are the same man, although given his age would he have graduated from Oxford then moved north, only to return to practice in Oxford? I'll be interested to know if/when you solve this puzzle.

I have just revisited my notes and find that Charles WEBB was matriculated "Pharmacopola" from Oxford in 1818 - as an Apothecary. Hence it would be perfectly understandable (I believe) if he afterwards graduated from Aberdeen University as a Surgeon. This would need to be prior to 1830 when he is listed in Pigot's Directory as such. It would also explain why he was only listed as an Apothecray in 1823/4.
Hence for the Charles Cropper WEBB to be the same man, he would need to have graduated from Aberdeen University between 1823/30.
However, to further complicate matters, and the reason for my doubting that these are one and the same men, I have a reference to a Charles WEBB, an Oxford Apothecary who went bankrupt in 1853.
Charles WEBB, husband of Elizabeth nee SPEAKMAN, died in 1848. They did have a son, Charles Speakman WEBB born 1838, but who hardly had time to become qualified and bankrupt by 1853.
Can anyone provide further details of the bankrupt Charles WEBB in 1853? I will also post this question on the Oxford board.
