licence to alienate
« on: Tuesday 17 November 09 01:42 UTC (UK) »

Does any one know what "licence to alienate" or the word 'alienation' mean in Manor Records. I have one or two ancesters with the word 'Alien' after thier name in the Manor of Bolton.

Thank you.

Hi Judy,

I found this in Google:

LICENCE TO ALIENATE: royal permission, by Letters patent, to sell or dispose of a property obtained from the Crown and held by knight service.

Hi Gillian,
Thanks for the reply. I wonder how that relates to my ancestors having 'Alien' written after their name. I wonder if it means that they have sold land on to some one else. But if that is so some of them still have their name written in the Manor Roll for a few years. May be they still hold other bits of land.

I only hope it does not mean they were from out of space!!!

Any other ideas welcome.
