Charles WEBB, Apothecary, Oxford
« on: Wednesday 03 June 09 01:13 UTC (UK) »

Charles WEBB was an Oxford Apothecary who was declared Bankrupt in 1853.  Who was this man?

He appears not to have been Charles WEBB (c1795-1848) surgeon of Oxford who married Elizabeth nee SPEAKMAN, and who was baptised Charles Cropper WEBB in 1800 in Birmingham. Nor was he Charles' son, Charles Speakman WEBB born 1838, who would not have had time to become qualified and bankrupt by 1853.

Who then is the bankrupt Charles WEBB who is possibly listed in Pigot's Directory 1823/4 as Apothecary of Magdalene Parish?

Any help appreciated.

It would appear that Charles WEBB was not declared bankrupt in 1853 but on December 22, 1843.  It was the 2nd Dividend which was awarded in 1853.

He is, however, described in 1843 as Apothecary, Dealer and Chapman of the city of Oxford and the 1st Dividend payable in 1846 to the creditors of WEBB and GODFREY.

Surely this man cannot be the same as Charles (Cropper) WEBB, surgeon of St Giles, Oxford who died in 1848?

Any information re WEBB and GODFREY would be most welcome.

These are dated 1845 and 1846 - do these infer this bankrupt Charles WEBB has died by that time??  It sort of sounds so to me? But I'm not sure how to 'read' legal lingo  Grin

I guess the following is the the one you mentioned who died 1848 - married to Elizabeth SPEAKMAN?

I have to say - it does look like the "Surgeon" at St Giles Street is the same man as the bankrupt.....

http://www.headington.org.uk/oxon/doctors/lists/doctors.htm
1823/4: Pigot & Co - Charles Webb, Magdalene-parish (P), but as apothecary, not surgeon)
1830: Pigot & Co - Charles Webb, Beaumont Street (P)
1839: Robson's Commercial Directory  - Charles Webb, St Giles Street (P)
1842: Pigot's Directory of Oxfordshire and Berkshire - Charles Webb, 16 St Giles Street

http://www.headington.org.uk/oxon/doctors/apothecaries/index.htm
Charles Webb
"Matriculated as "Pharmacopola" on 2 April 1818, but listed as a surgeon of St Mary Magdalen parish in Pigot's Directory for 1823/4, with Beaumont Street specified in 1830. By 1839 he was a surgeon in St Giles Street"

"......matriculated as apothecaries by the University [of Oxford] .....They were matriculated under various titles: Pharmacopola, Apothecary, Alchymista, Druggist, Chemist, and Chemicus......  Some of the apothecaries listed below also styled themselves "surgeon"; and conversely, some of the privileged surgeons also acted as apothecaries"

Yes, Ambly, I thought so too that they are one and the same but, initially, I was thrown by the 1853 Bankruptcy Dividend and then concerned that there could have been two men.

If the Bankrupt was deceased at the final Dividend, wouldn't this have been mentioned or words to the estate of ... been inserted?

Charles Cropper WEBB graduated in Medicine from Aberdeen University on December 31, 1817.

Charles WEBB graduated "Pharmacopola" (Privileged) from Oxford on April 2, 1818.

Charles WEBB, Apothecary, Dealer and Chapman was declared Bankrupt on December 2, 1843.

Surely the two degrees are in the wrong order?  Wouldn't he have sought accreditation as an Apothecary BEFORE Medicine?

The Apothecary, Dealer and Chapman description also suggested that he peddled his wares as an intinerant.  Was this usual for a Surgeon?

Whilst I am of the mind that all of the above refers to the same man, I am still not fully convinced.

Hi Jill

How sure are you that the graduation in Aberdeen is the same man?  I would have thought that would have made him an MD,  a step or two higher than a surgeon in those days.

I have checked all the baptisms of his children in the St Mary Magdelaine registers Oxford,  in each his occupation is surgeon and the middle name of Cropper is never mentioned

Undecided

Hi

I wonder if the actual birthdate of Charles Cropper WEBB could be found , perhaps from the actual document recording his baptism in March 1800?  He surely must have been a bit older than 17 years & 9mths old when he gained he graduated in Medicine in  Aberdeen?  I noticed on the IGI, his baptism date is the same as that of a sibling, Samuel Harrison WEBB. Might be twins but maybe not - perhaps they were baptised in a "job lot" when one or both of them was past infancy - something which often occurred.

The three youngest of eight children of Thomas and Betty WEBB were baptised together in 1800 - George, Charles Cropper and Samuel Harrison.  I have not yet examined the actual church register.

Charles WEBB was 53 years of age upon his death in 1848, hence he was born c1795.

Debbie is correct in that Charles WEBB, surgeon of Oxford, never appears to have used his second given name which I have always found odd and is one of the reasons I am re-visiting my research for this man.  However, his son - Philip Speakman WEBB - is consistently described as the grandson of the medallist, Thomas WEBB, which surely makes Philip's father the son of Thomas WEBB and this son was baptised as Charles Cropper WEBB with his siblings in 1800.
