Samuel Druce - Request
« on: Friday 27 February 09 01:36 UTC (UK) »

I have been researching my family tree on A*****y for a college project with a free trial I found off Facebook.
My free trial has just ended, just as I started to get into the interesting bit.

I was told by a relative that my grt, grt, grandfather was called Samuel Noble Blake. After a bit of search, I found his name was actually Noble Samuel Blake. Only a slight difference, but once I changed it I suddenly found a large tree containing many of my ancestors leading from Noble. I collected enough names to fulfill the quota given by the teacher, but before I could research the people themselves my trial ended.

So heres my request. The most notable person I found was Samuel Druce (and his wife Hannah Nalder, but lets not complicate things). Uploaded onto the tree was a painting of him (and one of Hannah on her profile). I can only assume this shows he was a man of some importance.

He was born September 1787, and died 18th July 1860. Both events occured in Eynsham, Oxfordshire. His parents were Joseph Druce (1745-1821) and Mary Kerry (1751-1828). He married his wife Hannah (1793-1870) on 12 October 1811 in Northmoor, Oxfordshire.

I would love it if someone could please search the census records from 1801-1851, and find out what he worked as during his life, and the exact names of his children (the ones on the tree seem a bit iffy).

Thats so much for reading in the first place guys =] I know it was a bizarrely long post

Hi Lee

Looks like you're hooked  Smiley

Here is what I have found,  though I should mention that for most places in this country the first available useful census is that of 1841,  so Samuel can only be found on 1841 and 1851 (however I have found him twice on 1851  Cheesy  it does happen)

1841 Eynsham

DRUCE
Samuel 50 Farmer Y
Hannah 45 Y
Mary 25 Y
Sarah 25 Y
Joseph 20
Samuel 20
James 20
John 15
Margaret 6
Elizabeth 4
Sarah NALDER 45 Y
+ 2 servants

1851 lodging in Holborn

HO107-1527 Fo128 P 44

Samuel Druce 63  Mar Farmer born Ensham Oxfordshire

however he is also listed back at home in Eynsham

HO107/1731 Fo 107,  Eynsham, Mill Street
Samuel Druce H M 65 Farmer born Ensham
Hannah Druce W M 58 born Northmoor
Mary Druce D U 38 born Ensham
Jane Druce D U 32 born Ensham
Samuel Druce S U 30 born Ensham
+ 2 servants

from the register transcripts of Eynsham (OFHS)
baptisms
1812 Oct 21 Mary d/o Samuel & Hannah Druce (born Jun 17)
1813 Dec 29 Sarah d/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - farmer (born Oct 9)
1815 May 16 Hannah d/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - Farmer
1816 Dec 23 Joseph s/o Samuel & Hannah  Druce  (born Oct 31)
1819 Jan 24 Jane Matilda d/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - farmer (born Jan 23 1819)
1821 Mar 7 Samuel s/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - Farmer (born Feb 27)
1823 Sep 30 Frances Elizabeth d/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - Farmer (born Sep 29)
1825 Aug 8 John s/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - Farmer (born Aug 9)
1827 Jul 22 George Frederick s/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - Farmer (born Jul 7)
1832 Apr 18 William s/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - Farmer (born Apr 18)
1837 Feb 10 Margaret Frances d/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - Farmer (born )ct 1 1834)
1837 May 16 Elizabeth Nalder d/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - Farmer (born Nov 27 1836)
1842 Aug 22 Albert Francis Milton s/o Samuel & Hannah Druce - Farmer (born Mar 27)

So all the childrens names tie up except the birth of James - givine on the A**y tree as born in 1821 - I couldn't find him at all

Smiley

Hope it helps

James Druce is listed as both being born and dying in 1821. Im guessing there was some sort of complication. He probably then didn't have a baptism.

I'm just trying to think about him appearing twice... Is it likely he lived in Oxfordshire but stayed in London at certain times of the year for work of some sort?
But would they put both occurences on the census? and why is his age different for both?

Hi Lee

Appearing twice is not unusual as the family probably said he lived there even though he was away duriing the previous evening, which is what they were asked by the enumerator.

Ages do appear differently.

Firstly, some people didn't really know how old they were so just guessed.

Secondly, in the 1941 census ages were either rounded up or down to the nearest '5' for adults. That is if you were 43 you'd be rounded up to 45 and if you were 42 you'd be rounded down to 40.

Thirdly, women tended to lose years as they got older.   Roll Eyes  Not much changes  Grin Grin
