Hi Smuin7
if you buy his birth cert. it will have his mother's name on it.
You need to get the registration number for his birth- you'll find that on freebmd and then order it online.

I ordered about 5 Robert Wilsons birth certificates online already and none of them was him. He was born in Dec 1885 do you think it would be registered in 1886 the first Quarter. DanNette

That's waful that you ordered so many and they were not your man! I'd have a fit if that happened.
About his birth being registered in first quarter of the next year- if his birth was at the very end of Dec. I'd guess it is possible but you say his birthday was 13 Dec so that's pushing it a bit I'd think.
Have you any clues at all when he went to the USA? If it was after 1891 then he should be on UK 1891 census... and so on ... but then your problem is to identify which Robt with father John he was.
Do you know which year or where his father John was born? That would make UK census hunting easier.

Hi there Robert Wilson is an awfully elusive character - I have one in my tree and he was a master mariner - I have all the details for his wife and family births, census entries, but cannot trace a marriage or census entry for him! His son died in the Hartley Pit disaster and the family live in North Shields and Tynemouth so we assume he was a local but don't even know his birthdate. I have been trying to find him for several years now - he could be one of your births! Do you have a certificate with parents William and Alice? Let me know and I'd be happy to reimburse you if its my Robert Wilson b somewhere between 1820 and 1830 we think. Ros Skingsley

1851 census HO107 Piece 2412 Folio 237 Page 33; This records Robert's wife as Mary Ann and his first child as William born in 1849.( Cert says Maiden name Wilson) We believe that Maryann was born in Whittingham 1827 and have found a Mary Ann Wilson illegitimate daughter of Ann Wilson baptised 29th April 1827 in Whittingham Church. (We are not certain that this is definitely her though as another Mary Ann Wilson is recorded in Census data working as a servant and cook when we can say our Mary Ann is married and with family. ) We thought a Wilson marrying a Wilson would be easy to find but not so! The family are well documented through all the following census info living in and around Tynemouth. Robert is a Master Mariner according to daughter Ann Isabella's marriage certificate (1872). Mary Ann lived until her Death : 8 July 1896 in 74 Howard Street, Tynemouth. Declared herself as a widower in the 1881 census so we assume Robert died between 1871 and 1881. He does not appear on any of the census records with the family!! Hope that helps Ros

Thanks Andrea - I am new to this and didn't realise!!!:-[
We don't know that they were William and Alice- its just that Robert called his firstborn William and then Alice. He William died in the Hartley Pit disaster and Alice can be tracked through the census. Wilhelmina (Robert's daughter) stayed with her uncle Thomas Wilson in 1881 census. Though we cannot find reference to his parents either.
I have the Archives at Kew on my list of to do's this summer and yes he could have died at sea. He must have died between 1872 on daughters marriage cert and 1881 when Mary Ann declares herself a widow on the census. Here is a useful reference for masters and mates in 1860 - found by chance! http://books.google.com/books?pg=PT64&id=0ekNAAAAQAAJ someone else may find it useful. Ros
