My grandmother Irene Mary Saunders was born in Whippingham Road Brighton, 6 FEB 1911, to Elizabeth Saunders of Fisherton Anger, Aldebury in Wiltshire. Elizabeth's birth is about 1889 to Frank and Catherine Saunders . My grandma was adopted out as a baby, or infant, by an "aunt and uncle"..... Mr and Mrs Shepherd. No first names are known. The only concrete info that I have is that Mr Shepherd (not sure of spelling) was in the Royal Navy and he (plus wife and child) were stationed in Hong Kong for about 13 years, returning to England around 1936-39. There are possible links to Mt Victoria Hospital. Gran had a southern england accent and possible links to Weston Super Mare. There is little else to go on, to gain further information about her adoptive parents. Just hoping that someone in the Wiltshire area may have a few drops in the bucket before I start trying to swim this ocean of research from NZ. Irene Mary married John Read of Salford, Lancs in 1939. He was stationed at Colchester military base and I think they met in Brighton. Thank you for reading ...any clues, tips or advice will be gratefully taken on board.

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat
If you use the advanced person search for 1911 census it is possible to play around and find out a lot before spending anything - I couldn't resist doing so
Elizabeth Saunders and Irene Mary age 2months are still in Whippingham Road
and interestingly also in Whippingham Road Grace Sheppard 39, John Sheppard 42 and some young Sheppards
Worth checking out further

Hello again, Kia Ora from New Zealand. Thank you so much Andrea and Jan for your excellent replies. I will order a birth certificate for Elizabeth - to check/confirm details as you say.
WOW! it is amazing you were able to discover a "Sheppard" family living at 45 Whippingham Rd... my gran was born at 42. As you say, a worthwhile while longshot. Possibly a connection to "Mr Sheppard" of the navy. I will use the 1881 to discover J.Sheppard's (at number 45) male siblings, first. Just knowing how the experts take a perspective on the information at hand really helps. Irene Mary's marriage mentions no Shepherds, and no father is named on her birth certificate. Thank you for revealing new lines of enquiry... your time and thinking has really helped me. CHEERS!

Hi Sue
Just some more thoughts
I wonder if one of the sons of John and Grace could be the Sheppard who joined the Royal Navy (maybe during WW1?) and he and his wife took Irene in? Do you know what happened to Elizabeth? Just wondering if she died and Irene was fostered then?
