Birth record for James Graham c1838
« on: Wednesday 03 June 09 03:21 UTC (UK) »

Hello all

I am researching my husband's great-grandfather James Graham and having trouble in finding his birth record.  I have his marriage (in Scotland)and death (in Morinish, Qld, Aust) certificates, and his daughter's birth certificate in Morinish, Qld, Australia which shows he was born c1838 at Guildford (Gilford?) Down, Nthn Ireland.  He married Margaret Reid on 15 July 1864 at Abbey, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland and was living at Collier Street, Johnstone at the time.  His parents are shown on the cert as George Graham, agricultural labourer and Jane Wright or Waight (both living).

Could anyone advise me where to search?

Thanks.....Rae

Since civil registration of births didn't start until 1864 you would need to search for church records, which may or may not exist for that period. To do so you need to know the family's religion nd then see which churches are in the right area and if their records go back to 1830s.
Ros Davies' Co. Down website has lots of local information which you might want to look at:

Gilford Co Down is in the civil parish of Tullylish and the following church baptismal records are on microfilm in PRONI for the period you're looking for:-

Tullylish Church of Ireland - baptisms from 1820
Tullylish Presbyterian - baptisms from 1821
Newmills Presbyterian - baptisms from 1838
Tullylish Roman Catholic - baptisms from 1833
Gilford Methodist - baptisms from 1836

so, provided his DoB is right, there's a good chance you'll find his birth in PRONI.

Hello Aghadowey

Thanks for your advice.  It is hard to know exactly what James Graham's religion was.  He married Margaret Reid at Abbey Manse, Paisley, "after Banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland" by Andrew Watson, minister of the Abbey Parish of Paisley on 15 July 1864. Margaret's birth was registered at Abbey, Renfrew.  They emigrated to Queensland, Australia on the 'Samarang" leaving Glasgow on 24 July 1865 - only names and ages are shown on the shipping list - no religion. His age varies slightly on the four certificates I have, from 1837 to 1839, though I may have to be satisfied with an approximate age for him.

Thanks for your rosdavies link, I will look at it in detail.

Regards......Rae
