John CROXFORD (1613-?)

Have traced back family tree to this relative but now am stuck with tracing roots back any further.

I know that he was born 1613 in Sydenham, Oxfordshire, England.

Married Rachel Towne (1616-?) in 1639.

Children:

Robert (1642-1724)  born: Lewknor, Oxfordshire, England.
John (1644-1682)
William (1646-1676)
Thomas (1648-1721)
Richard (1650-1709)

Any help would be great.  Smiley

If you know when and where he was born, do you have his parents' names?

The OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837) only has two CROXFO(O)RD marriages before 1613.  The closest one to Lewknor/Sydenham is at Nuffield (the other is at Bampton, the other side of the county).

Have you considered that his parents may have come from out of the county (the county boundary is only a parish or two away from Sydenham)?

Hi Penny

I do not know any details on his parents.

His name and birth details came from an Ancestry family tree suggestion but I assumed this to be correct as it seemed genuine.

I understand that the relatives may have come from a different county nearby but narrowed down to Oxfordshire to begin with to try and identify which Croxford's were the direct family I was tracing.

I will have a look at the Oxon Marriage Index then but dont know how to do this, I can't find it on Ancestry or FreeBMD

The Oxfordshire Marriage Index was produced by the OFHS and is not available online.  You can get individual look-ups from them - see http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/#marrs - or purchase the complete CD-rom.

Here is the Nuffield marriage that I found:

27 MAY 1613 - Thomas CROXFORD to Rose MOWDY

The actual parish registers may have further information on the marriage entry, and it may well be worth investigating this couple further in the Nuffield PRs to see if they stayed in the parish and had children there and/or were buried there, before moving on to other lines of research!

Further to previous message, Sydenham parish records don't start until the mid 1600s so I don't think it will be possible to confirm that John came from that parish.

However, Nuffield records start in 1570 so it should be possible to have a go at tracing John and Rose.

You may also like to consider asking the OFHS for a look-up of their Oxfordshire Baptism Index (1538-1851).  The majority of Sydenham's surrounding parishes are included (and the various records date back to 1604 or earlier).  Details are on the same page as the MI.  Coverage can be found at http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/pardata.html.

The marriage of Thomas Croxford to Rose Mowdy in 1613 could indicate John's parents, if assume that they married in the same year he was born.
