Hi Magnus
By the reuse of the names it would appear that Katherine b. 1733, Androw b. 1734, Euphame b. 1736, Thomas b. 1737 and Eupham b 1741 all died young and their names given to later siblings.
So you are really looking for descendants of the remaining 13 children.
Marriage in Edinburgh: "Chalmers, Andrew, writer, in N.E.p ; Eupham Rankin, d. of William R., wright, in N.W.p 15 Aug 1725, m. 2 Sept 1725"
Marriage of Eupham's parents in Edinburgh: "Rankin, William, wright, Burgess ; Elizabeth Cairns, d. of late Robert C., wright, burgess, in N.W.p 27 Feb. 1704
Her 7 siblings are on the IGI if you don't already have them.
From the Roll of Edinburgh Burgesses and Guild Bretheren (http://www.scotsfind.org/)
"Ranken (Rankine), Wm., wright, B., as p. to dec. Robert Cairnes, wright, B. (26 Mar 1690) 17 Sept 1701"
Possible entry for your Andrew: "Chambers (Chalmers), Andrew, B. and G. be r. of fr. Wm. C. writer, B. and G., gratis, by act of C.for good services 10 Nov. 1736"
(B. and G. = Burgess and Guild brother) (by act of C. = by act of town council, not in burgess register) (be r. of = by right of) (fr = father) (p. = 'prentice)

Kirsty:
Thanks for your prompt reply. You are right about the children who died in infancy. I am trying to contact someone who has done some research on the Chalmer family as I am at a dead end. At this stage I do not want to research Andrew's wife's family.
I have traced one son, James, b. 1742, but that male line dies out. So that really leaves me with 7 sons and their descendants,if any.
Is Christian a male or female name in Scotland please?
Andrew was the son of William Chalmer/s and Katherine Weir m. 1701.

Hi Laura
Christian tends to be a female name but can be either. It can be interchangable with Christina.
In this case female: Christian Chalmers female Christening 31st July 1728 Edinburgh
So you are looking for descendants of William 1726 Christian 1728 Hugh 1730 John 1735 Isobel 1738 Elizabeth 1740 James 1742 Thomas 1743 Janet 1744 Catherine 1745 Andrew 1747 David 1748 Eupham 1751
but most interested in the male lines highlighted is that correct?
Just found your other thread. To prevent further duplication of effort I'll link to it: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,81865.0.html

Kirsty:
It was great that you found that other link because there was an interesting message from 2005! which I am now following Up. Hope to send you tree if interested.
Yes I am interested in William b.1726 Hugh b.1730 (waiting to hear if there is any connection - refer link) John b.1735 James b. 1742 (James left Scotland for London - I have researched and know all about this branch line which has now has died out) Andrew 1747 David b. 1748

Hi Laura
There is a possible entry for William in the Edinburgh Roll of Burgesses.
"Chambers (Chalmers) Wm., Surgeon, B. and G. , in r. of fr. Andrew C., writer, B. and G. 12 Nov. 1755"
So if you find a marriage with that occupation it could be him. For example:
"Chalmers, William, Surgeon in the New Kirk p. and Miss Jean, d. of deceast Sir John Nisbet of Dean, now in the New North p. 19 Dec 1756"
1 daughter to this couple on the IGI Jean Chalmer ch. 1773 St Cuthberts Edinburgh
