FRENCH family, Portsmouth and Kent
« on: Thursday 04 June 09 15:51 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have any information about my great-grandfather's (Robert French b. 1891, Gillingham) siblings. I lose track of them after the 1901 census which has them living in Gillingham. However, I suspect the brothers may have joined the Marines or Army and ended up in Portsmouth. Daisy may have emigrated to America with her mother.

They are:

Joseph Robert French b. 15 Dec 1879, Portsmouth
Daisy Ada French b. 01 Oct 1881, Portsmouth
Violet Lillian May French b.1884, Gillingham
Ada Madeline French b. 1885, Gillingham
William Francis French b. 15 May 1887, Gillingham
George French b. 15 Mar 1889, Gillingham
Harry French b. 08 Sep 1893

Parents: Joseph French b. 1847, Gillingham and Ada Madeline Wilkins b. 1860, Portsmouth

Any information about what happened to them (or their mother) would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Joseph Robert French joined the Royal Marines 15 Feb 1895 - but he had several service nos: 5579 (for Royal Marine Artillery), 7900 & 14547 (Light Infantry Chatham Division), 10357 (Portsmouth Division).  He seems to have enlisted again on 20 Jan 1910, Chatham Division, service no 16365

A George French with birth date of 5 March 1889 joined the Chatham division, 7 March 1904 service no 13893

Harry French joined up on 14 Oct 1907, same division.  Service no 15653

Robert French birth date 25 Jan 1890 enlisted 16 Dec 1907 in Royal Marine Artillery: continuous service, service no 12134.

Their service records can be downloaded from TNA for £3.50 each

William does not appear in either the Marine or Royal Navy service records.

Many Thanks Nell

I assume TNA is the National Archives. I'll try getting hold of their service records and hopefully they'll give more personal info as well.
