Kilgeever, Co. Mayo
« on: Monday 22 October 07 05:22 UTC (UK) »

I am searching for information on Richard and Catherine Scott (nee Prendergast) buried in Kilgeever cemetery, Co. Mayo. Catherine Scott was born around 1831 and appears in the 1901 Census living in Aghany, near Kilgeever, Mayo. Richard Scott was already dead by 1901. They are buried together. If any member lives near Kilgeever cemetery I would be very grateful if you could get in touch. I would also be interested to hear from anybody familiar with finding marriage records in Louisburgh RC Church.

Hi Liam and welcome to Rootschat -

In Ireland civil registration for births marriages and deaths began in 1864(except marriages-other than Roman Catholic - which start from1845.)
So if you're trying to find details before 1864(RC)you will have to rely on parish records.
Many of these are kept with the local parish priest or copies are held at the National Library in Dublin.
Some parish records are available to view on microfilm(have to be ordered) through your nearest Latter Day Saints(LDS) centre for a small fee. You can also order the 1901 and 1911 census through the LDS-the film is ordered and you go there to view the records.

I've written myself to parish priests to see if the records are still held in the parish and to request help if they do (I think it's polite to enclose a donation-maybe about ten euros ?) and have always had a reply-even if they couldn't help!

I've enclosed a few links-

Kilgeever Parish -

1901 census for Mayo -
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml

Griffiths Valuation(land valuation taken in Ireland)-http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

Some Mayo parish records(brths+marriages etc.)-
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~deesegenes/index.html

LDS Film Numbers-
http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlmayo/townlands/Carrigskeewaun.htm

The surname s Scott and Prendergast appear in some of these .

Hope this helps - Good Luck!

Hi again Liam

Just had a thought. On the site for the 1901 census -as well as doing a search for one person -

If you select -  County Mayo
Then just input Kilgeever in the parish - no other details-you should be able to see everyone in the parish at that time.

Liam,
On Thursday next, I will be at my local Family History Center and will look at the Kilgeever church records for Richard and Catherine Prendergast Scott.

I have info on Kilgeever records in conjunction with school reunion being planned for "Accony" area this coming July 2009.
I couldn't get through to you on your regular email after you moved in 2008, so am trying this contact route.
