Richard Goodchild of Wickham - born where?
« on: Thursday 04 June 09 23:02 BST (UK) »

Richard Goodchild (d. Wickham 1711) gave his home as Fareham when he married Mary Gilbert at Bighton in 1695.  Since C17 Wickham registers are apparently lost, and Richard Goodchild is not in C17 Fareham reg., has anyone got any ideas as to where he might have come from?  I've asked the 'Goodchilds of Hampshire' website but no reply - are the authors perhaps out there on rootschat?  And, for that matter, why would Mary Gilbert have been living in Bighton - I find no Gilberts in C17 Bighton but there are some in C17 Fareham!  Anyone into the Gilberts on this board?
Then Richard's son Thomas Goodchild, b. Wickham 1701, apparently moved to Otterbourne and there married three wives and sired numerous children from 1730 on.  Can anyone explain why a labourer, son of a labourer, should move thus at that period?  Can we be at all certain this is really the right identification (lots of Ancestry trees go for some other Thomas Goodchild but this is really the best fit).
Maybe someone knows some good recent scholarship on the social history of central Hampshire 1650-1750 which could put these mysteries in context?  Or even has someone got the Wickham registers for 1620-1695 hidden under their bed all this time?
