Knott family from Great Haseley lost at sea
« on: Friday 05 June 09 07:09 UTC (UK) »

One of my 2x great grandmother was Ann Knott baptised at Great Haseley on the 29th April 1810 hence I have an interest in that parish, I do not know what the population was at that time but I note that in 1991 it was 530 so it is not a big parish and the surname Knott is not in the same league as Smith as regards numbers so one could assume that persons with that surname in that parish should have some sort of connection with my ancestor.
Which leads me to a request Has anyone any information on a Charles Knott born c 1806? The reason for this request is that in August 1845 the ship Cataraque with a crew of 35 and 369 emigrants on board whilst being battered by a gale struck rocks in Bass Strait and sank, of those on board only 4 of the crew and 1 emigrant survived. Amongst those who perished was a family of Knotts whose native parish was given as Great Haseley they were Charles Knott 39 his wife Rebecca 40 and their 6 children Matthew 17, Joseph 14, Charles 10, Ann 8, Rebecca 6 & James 2. I thought I had covered all the Knott's but I do not have Charles listed.
For information other Oxfordshire names amonst the emigrants were Cook from Tackley, Cotterell from Fringford, Hoare from Tackley, Anthoney from Tackley, Ryman from Tackley, Savings from Tackley, White from Fringford, Rolling from Stonesfield ,Barrett from Stonesfield ( Stonesfield not named as Oxfordshire)

I've had a quick look at the Great Haseley PR transcript - courtesy of OFHS.

I can't see any members of this particular family listed.   I've also had a look at the 1841 census on Ancestry and there is nothing obvious there either.

I agree with Harry - none of their baptisms are in the Great Haseley PRs.

Rebecca's birth is on FreeBMD - March Q of 1839 in the Thame Reg District, which includes Great Haseley, and many other parishes. Couldn't find James though.

Many thanks for your combined efforts, Many years ago on a trip to England I went through the Great Haseley and Thame registers and extracted all, or I think I did the Knott entries with their variations and did not find a Charles I have checked my records again to see if any of the Knotts married a Rebecca with no luck.
As a birth was found in the Thame Reg Dist the family must have been in that area and it seems to me it is too much of a coincidence for there not to be a connection with the Knotts in that area.
As far as the marriage of Charles to Rebecca goes it could have taken place anywhere, my Knott ancestor though born in Great Haseley married in 1834 at St Marys Newington Surrey as did her brother John another brother at St Georges Hanover Square  and I have only found one of the family marrying at Great Haseley she was the Elizabeth Mary.
Though obviously there will be no descendants of Charles for sentimental reasons it would be nice to attach him to some family, sure it was a long way to come to die within a few days of reaching their destination.
