My family comes from Suffolk, and I've never heard of Whittlesome.
The nearest sounding names would be Willisham, Wissington, Willingham, or Wattisham.
Don't forget that many people couldn't write in those days, so the person who wrote it down maybe only wrote what he heard.
P.S. There is/was a Whittlesham in Norfolk (seen it referred to on Google), not a million miles away.

Think it may well be Witnesham - this was my first thought and when I looked on IGI there seem to have been a number of Peter Palmers there.

Thank you both. i couldn't find Whittlesham in norfolk Nick, but yes, i suppose as you say spelling could be a tad hit and miss in those days! the information re whittlesome came from the 1880 u.s. census, so presumably the American enumerator would not only have a strange dialect but also a place name he had never heard of to contend with.
Thanks Annette, i think you may be right Witnesham seems a very likely option. i shall try to get some kind soul to check the parish records and emigration records.
