grandfather and great-grandfather
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 20:03 UTC (UK) »

 Hi,
I am writing from Mesa, Arizona.  My grandfather, John Armstrong was born in Neilston in 1852, and my great-grandfather, William Armstrong and Agnes Smith were married in Paisley in 1851.  Any info..anyone?

Hi

Could you clarify exactly what type of info you are looking for?

Census
Birth/marriage/death etc

This is a submitted entry from the IGI which is free to search at www.familysearch.org.  Submitted entries are frequently incorrect

WILLIAM ARMSTRONG    Spouse  AGNES SMITH
Marriage  10 OCT 1851   Neilston Renfrew

This is an extracted record for the same marriage so has been transcribed from the original entry

WILLIAM ARMSTRONG    Spouse  AGNES SMITH
Marriage  06 OCT 1851   Abbey (Paisley) Renfrew

Another example of submitted versus extracted entries

Extracted

JAMES ARMSTRONG   Birth:  03 FEB 1854
Christening:  19 FEB 1854   Neilston Renfrew
Father:  WILLIAM ARMSTRONG    Mother:  AGNES SMITH

Submitted

JAMES ARMSTRONG   Birth:  03 FEB 1854
Christening:  09 FEB 1854   Neilston Renfrew
Father:  WILLIAM ARMSTRONG   Mother:  AGNES SMITH

Only a submitted one for John

JOHN ARMSTRONG   Birth:  25 MAR 1852
Christening:  25 APR 1852   Neilston
Father:  WILLIAM ARMSTRONG    Mother:  AGNES SMITH

There are also 3 births in Castleton Roxburgh to a couple with the same names

William 1867
Andrew 1870
Thomas 1873

Thank you very much, that was very helpful.  Are there any records of the death of William or Agnes?  I know John left because I am a direct descendant, I don't know about the other brothers.  I do know that John signed HIS grandfathers death certificate (Also named John) which would indicate that William had died before that.
  Thank you so very much.

Hi

I cannot find this family on the 1861 or 1871 census but you would need to search www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for deaths - it's a paysite

Thanks, Carole,
I appreciate your help.  I am going to have to make a trip to Scotland and pour through church records I guess.  William and Agnes Smith were married in Paisley in 1851, any data on their marriage?
  Thanks again, Carole

Hi  Smiley

This may be why the family don't show in the Scottish censuses:

John’s parents were possibly WILLIAM Armstrong and Agnes SMITH, shown on shipping arrivals with a two year old son, John in 1854. His birth is registered as 1852 at the Karrakatta Cemetery where he was buried in 1932. Wendy has now confirmed from John’s death certificate that his parents were indeed William and Agnes. John can be found in the IGI as being christened on March 25 1852 at Neilston, Renfrew SCO. William and Agnes were married at Paisley in October 1851. Subsequently Wendy found their registered deaths giving his parents as JOHN (1800) and Agnes GRINDLE (1810). Then we found them in the 1851 living at Dunscore, Dumfries SCO where John was a farmer of 8 acres. William had siblings HENRY (1830), JOHN (1840) and FRANCIS (1847). Does anyone have any connections with either the siblings or the parents?

Wow! Monica, you have opened up another door...I thought John had left Scotland as a young man.  His parents William Armstrong and Agnes Smith shipped out to Australia with him as a two-year-old?  I knew my grandfather was buried in Karrakatta cemetery in Western Australia, so that is absolutely correct.  Do you have the name of the ship?  The port of arrival?  Any death information on William and Agnes?

Hi Patrick

I don't have any more info other than what was on that link. Can I suggest perhaps that you post on the Australian board here on RC www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,165.0.html where people have a lot of experience on Australian resources  Smiley Always good to put a link to previous posts if appropriate so people can start from what you already have.
