Tainton, 'near Bulford on the Windrush'
« on: Friday 05 June 09 15:08 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Wonder if someone could help me figure out a location mentioned in some old family notes.

They say ‘Thomas Perry of Gloucester (Tainton near Bulford on the Windrush near Oxfordshire’. Some further notes say that there are two Taintons in Gloucester- ‘the one near Newent is the wrong one. The proper one is near Bulford on the Windrush and near Oxfordshire’.

I have found a ‘Taynton’ on the map, but this is the one near Newent. Can anyone make sense of where the other Tainton is please?

Thanks,

Vicki Perry

Vicki,

Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk , choose "Maps" and search for Windrush.

You will be given two choices but they both give the same map Cheesy

Pan eastwards ten times and you will see the small hamlet named Taynton which is a little way north of the River Windrush.

Abit further east and south is Burford not Bulford.

Regards

I think this is an example of the use of "Gloucester" being misleading - presumably in the context they mean "Gloucestershire" and therefore the Taynton in question need not be near the city - and the Windrush one certainly isn't!

Thank you for the replies! I have now managed to find it on the map.

The reference is from some old notes I have been sent by a fellow researcher, relating to an Perry family that settled in Ireland in the 17th century. Unfortunately there is no source information, or explanation as to why they think the family came from here, but it is a new avenue to research!
