Finding French Jews
« on: Friday 05 June 09 18:17 UTC (UK) »

Hello all,

I need some advice for finding French Jews' BDM records and the like, because I have no idea how to do so. I'll lay out the info I have and hopefully someone has some idea on what step to take next... However one of my ancestors (I gather) told a few lies along the way so it's difficult to tell what's true and what's false.

PHILIPPE  FAMA (my gggg grandfather)

Records place his year of birth anywhere from 1771 to 1794. When he applies for naturalisation to become a UK subject he states that he was born in 1794 and is from GRONDO, POLAND (now Belarus) HOWEVER, in a census record he says he was born in FRANCE (town name is illegible) and when he was on trial for forgery the man he wronged said that he passed himself off as a "French nobleman". Records have PHILIPPE often getting older but he also miraculously gets younger by a few years sometimes too.

It appears as though he spent time between London, England and Paris, France during the 1820s and on wards.

Sometime after being sent to goal in 1841 he changed his name to PHILIP. He dealt in cigars mostly and once stated that he was a diamond merchant. His father's name was MOSES FAMA. He had two wives HELENE PRAGUE and CHARLOTTE LAMBERT.

He died on the 13 April 1855 in Whitechapel - recorded age 74 years.

HELENE PRAGUE (my gggg grandmother - wife number one)

Born about 1794, don't know where but she did live in PARIS, FRANCE.

In 1815 she had a son named ALPHONSE HARTOG, born in Paris, France to a NEHUM HARTOG of Dutch descent. ALPHONSE was raised by PHILIPPE FAMA and he had a bunch of very successful children.

Then she is said to have married PHILIPPE FAMA and had the following children:
DINA FAMA b. Abt 1827 (1841 England Census says she was born in Foreign Parts) She is yet to be a confirmed child.
THEODORE CHARLES FAMA b. Abt 1830 and is said to be born in Faubourg St Germain, Paris, FRANCE. It's difficult to know how accurate this is. He is my ggg grandfather.
JULIA FAMA b.1832 (Some records incate she was born near Paris and others say in Middlesex)
HARRY FAMA b.1834 (Place of birth same as Julia Fama)

HELENE's father was MARCUS PRAGUE, possibly a notable Israelite in Paris after the Revolution.

HELENE died in Whitechapel, Middlesex in 1838.

So... with the info I have how is it that you find French Jews in Paris between 1790 and 1835??? Did France of England keep records of ships taking passengers between the two countries?

Sorry it's such a long post :S

Thank you kindly,
Eloise

Hi there,

Thanks so much for your responses and sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this. Unfortunately I don't have the money to follow up on those links. I'm currently living in China and the RMB doesn't fair so well to the Euro Sad

However, http://www.geneaservice.com/recherche/index.php appears to have the information I need seeing the how it covers Paris et sa région in the late 1700s and the early 1800s.

The only new information I have to date it that I believe Philippe Fama and Helene Prague had a daughter before my ggg grandfather Theodore in 1827 (probably in France)  named Dina/Dinah Fama. I know she went to England with the family as she appears on the 1841 England Census in London. However after that she seems to have vanished!

Thanks again for your help Smiley

kind regards,
Eloise
