Local Maps 1880`s??
« on: Saturday 06 June 09 06:53 UTC (UK) »

Good morning all, please could some kind soul point me( my brickwork is a bit the worse for wear!!) in the right direction for viewing maps for the local area from the 1880`s.
Particularly interested in Hatfield and surrounding area, especially the bit that was then Hatfield but is now Welwyn GC.

Much appreciated.

Steve.

or hard copy reprints from Cassini maps and Alan Godfrey Maps are good too.  Hertfordshire Archives at County Hall will also have tithe / enclosure and other maps.

Good luck

I think I am right in saying that the tithe maps date around 1840 but I know for a fact that HALS have maps for this time frame as I have looked at some of them.  Just ask in the local studies section.

Thanks for that Benzon, it usually seems to follow that current day names have originated from old ones or something similar, though l found on the census a road that l have never heard of and am surprised hasnt been kept in later times. Rauters Row???
Probably because the part of Hatfield that l am interested in is now part of Welwyn Garden City.
After looking at the census of both 1881 and 1891 l decided to look at all the pages either side of my ancestors to get a clearer picture.
As clear as mud but l am slowly getting there.

My local library (Hemel Hempstead) was selling Victorian Ordnance Survey maps of my local area.  It might be worth popping in to the main WGC library and see if they sell local maps of your area.

Hi Rick, and thanks for the info, l will pay them a visit, dont use it often but the staff are very helpful.

I found those sites mentioned earlier a bit difficult to navigate so the library may well be better.

Will let you know what l find.

Hi Steve,

Have you tried HALS?.  They have quite a range of Victorian Ordnance Survey maps for sale.

...which are the Alan Godfrey ones I referred to above.  You can order them online from http://www.alangodfreymaps.com/
...but they're better for towns than rural areas.  As Welwyn Garden City was a rural area in Victorian times, you might find Cassini's reprint of the 1" map for Luton & Hertford more helpful - especially as they do a version which has the modern National Grid superimposed on the old map, at 1:50000 scale, allowing you to directly compare the modern OS map with the earlier maps.  For my area they've even got four maps together, showing it in the 1830s, 1890s, 1920s and modern on the same sheet, all at the same scale.

Alas I couldn't find the maps, so I rang Hemel library.  They no longer sell them but the guy I spoke to was pretty sure that they were Alan Godfrey maps.  As Richard has already given the URL I won't repeat it here.
