Hi folks
This is my first tentative look into Yorkshire!
Does anyone have a transcript or suchlike for Saint Peter's, Sheffield, that could check an entry for me please.
The IGI has an entry for the marriage of William Ashmore & Martha Priest on 18/4/1770.
I'd be very grateful for any other information that may be available for this entry - especially their residence(s) if given, as I am trying to either rule this marriage in or out as a candidate for William & Martha Ashmore whose first mention in the PRs of Monyash, Derbyshire was the bapt of their eldest son in 1771.
Many thanks Mark

My kind of place

Pre registration marriages do not give place of residence. just bride and grooms names, status, whether of this parish and witnesses I am afraid.
If a parent was a witness you may be able to confirm it or not

The FHS marriage index is only an index of names (of brides and grooms), but it does confirm the existence of the marriage and gives the reference:
Marriage at Sheffield Parish Church Volume D page 900 entry 2290 (volume covers Nov 1769 to Oct 1776) William ASHMORE Martha PRIEST
The Sheffield Archives reference (leading to the microfiche copies of this volume) is:
PR(M) 138/102

Hi Patrish, I know residence is not always given before 1837 for baptisms and burials, but the pre-printed marriage registers in use from 1754 had a space for it, and although many vicars etc were a bit lax about completing it, I find that they usually did if one of the people getting married were from out of the parish. I just have to hope that he did in this case (if indeed this is "my" William & Martha).
Hi Hugh, thanks very much for that information. I guess it will have to wait until next time I get up to Sheffield, where I can check the PR myself. I do get to Sheffield Archives occasionally even though I have no Sheffield ancestors (so far!), simply because they have a fair amount of North Derbyshire material in there too.
Thanks again all
