Ballin/Bollan Middle Name Puzzle
« on: Saturday 06 June 09 11:26 UTC (UK) »

I'm hoping 'fresh eyes' might be able to help solve this conundrum.

In my STEEPLE family (Hull and, before that, Rawcliffe and Snaith), I have William & Rebecca Steeple having 5 children baptised at St Marys, Hull 1784-1790 including their first:

19 Jul 1784 Mary BALLIN Steeple.

Then their youngest son George (my line) marries and has a son:

William BOLLAN Steeple baptised at Holy Trinity, Hull 19 Nov 1812.

So, the name Ballin/Bollan is obviously an important family name.

I thought it would turn out to be the maiden name of William's wife Rebecca but I found their marriage 1783 at Holy Trinity, Hull and her name was Rebecca Thompson! Neither was it the maiden name of William Steeple snr's mother - that was Rhodes.

I suppose it's possible that Rebecca Thompson was on her second marriage - the 1783 PR entry doesn't give any clues as to whether she was a spinster or not, just that she was otp, but she was very young even for this marriage. I can't find a baptism for a Rebecca Thompson in Hull around the right time (c.1766 - from age at death).

Can anyone help? I feel that Ballin/Bollan is a very big clue which is staring me in the face, but I can't work it out!!  Embarrassed

Hi Jill,

Have you tried the Hugh Wallis site for middle names just in case it has been in previous generations?

Thanks, Gill. I'd completely forgotten about this website - haven't used it for ages.

There are a few to be found but mostly in the 1800s. There is one earlier baptism - a William Bollan THOMPSON 1761 in Batley. There's also a later Mary Bollan THOMPSON 1817 in Skipton in Craven. So, I'm thinking the name might well have been introduced from the Thompson side of the family rather than the Steeple side.

I know from censuses that Rebecca Steeple (nee Thompson) was born in Yorkshire c. 1766 and, although she was otp at her marriage in Hull in 1783, I'm wondering if this could mean that she was originally from West Yorkshire and that's why I couldn't find her baptism in Hull.

Mmm....the plot thickens!!!

I've now found a marriage at Holy Trinity, Hull 1741 between a Mary Bollan and a Timothy Hastings.

What I didn't say earlier because I didn't want to muddy the waters (!!  Roll Eyes) is that William & Rebecca Steeple also gave a middle name to another of their children: William Hastings Steeple (1789).

So, I'm now frantically trying to tie Timothy and Mary to this family - and getting nowhere!!  Cry An early child of theirs would be just about the right age to marry and have a Rebecca Thompson in c. 1766!!!!!!!!!

The clues are there - but where's the bloomin' answers?

Hi Jill,

No answers I'm afraid, but maybe a few more clues!!?

There's a Will which seems to have been contested, held by the Hull University Archives that mentions both Timothy Hastings and Mary Bollan, and also three children of Mary's, with rather tantalising initials, but unfortunately no full names.  I don't know how easy it would be to have a look at the Will....

Here's the link -

Good luck,

Thanks Yorkslass. I had a feeling that West Yorkshire came into the equation somewhere.

I'm getting very bogged down in this - Bollan doesn't seem to be a very common surname. I think I'll have to take a look at that Mary Bollan/Timothy Hastings marriage next time I'm at the RO and see if that throws up any clues. Plus any children they had - hopefully a daughter who married a Mr Thompson and had Rebecca c. 1766!! Oh look up there - another pig!!!  Grin Grin
