Overment/ Overman family (Sculthorpe, Norfolk)
« on: Saturday 06 June 09 13:32 UTC (UK) »

Hi
just joined and looking for help -
Briefly... I am new to family history and am researching my gt gt grandfathers family. I have found records of his birth and his siblings, (all registered with the surname Overman but in the census returns they are all listed as Overment. Overment is also his name on his marriage cert to my gt grandmother

I am just about finding my around the change of name, but am stuck trying to trace information on a Charles Overment, 'killed by a gunshot' aged 22 in 1890. I think the death was registered in Fakenham/ Sheringham and assume that there would have been an inquest - can anyone suggest where to look for more information.

Welcome to rootschat Trish,

Here's his death if you need to send for the certificate

Charles Overment
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1869
1Q 1891 Walsingham, Norfolk 4b 220
Age at Death: 22

Hopefully someone might be able to suggest a local paper which might have covered the incident

Hullo Trish and welcome to rootschat.
Fakenham will alsmost certainly have a Library there with a Local Studies Section and you could email them and ask if they'd check out the Inquest - maybe there is a report in local papers archives also- the Lubrary would know about that. They may ask you for an exact date of death which would mean you'd have to get the death  cert... 7GBP is the cost.. we can tell you how to do that if need  be.
re the surmane coming up in strange ways- that can be the transcriber who can't read the writing easily or it can be in the original record- quite common to get variantions especially before the 20th C.

Hi Trish

How are you getting on?  I think your best bet would be the NRO and Archant.  NRO is the repository for archives in Norfolk and Archant took over the local newspaper and could tell you where their older copies can be consulted.  I know the Dereham copies are with the Dereham Antiquarian Society but I don't know if the Fakenham ones are still in the town.

Good luck.
