Following on from ev's 1851 census here is Mary in 1861 with a wee Elizabeth just the right age born at Sorn!! Note the age gap!
Mary McGilvray 46 Ann McGilvray 23 John McGilvray 20 Mary McGilvray 14 Elizabeth McGilvray 6
A search at Hugh Wallis has an Elizabeth born 18th March 1854 to James McGilvray and Mary Borrows. So I think we need to find this Elizabeth in 1871.

In 1871 she is living at Sorn with her sisters Ann and Mary transcribed as McGilway on Ancestry.
Who were the witnesses at the marriage of Elizabeth Mitchell and Peter Connelly?

just to add to what cookies4 has found- i'm wondering if john mitchell was married to jean GILMOUR john mitchell & jean gilmour marriage 1st june 1832 sorn ayr(IGI) only child showing as jean mitchell born 14th oct 1845 sorn ayr(IGI) which might line up with jane mitchell age 5 shown on 1851 census(freeCEN) for john & jane mitchell given that elizabeth mitchell(married to peter connelly) is 27 on the 1881 census i think we are looking at a birth year before 1855 another thing to keep in mind - SP has - john mitchell died 1856 sorn ayr born c1812 sorry if this seems to be more questions than answers ev ps can anyone have a look on the 1861 census for any of the people mentioned Interesting too that John Mitchell born 1812 was living at Catrine, Sorn in 1851 and was also a weaver.
A bit more digging needed right enough but my money's on him being the father and Mary Borris/Borrows etc. the mother.
The biggest 'fly in the ointment' is the IGI birth stating Elizabeth was the daughter of James McGilvray.
Hopefully a closer look at her marriage entry might help.
Regards, Nel
PS - James McGilvray and Mary Burrows were married at Sorn in 1836.
