Thanks Mosiefish and Carole

This fits what my mum believes to have been the case - apparantley my nan did not get on with her step mother.

Does the record show what Lousia died of - and do you think that Henry had died by 1911 or left them.

Thanks for your help

Thinking about it, it perhaps was that she died in child birth.

I wonder what happened to him - died or walked out.

Hi Mark

You would need to buy a copy of the death cert to find the cause of death

There are no Holmes births with a mothers maiden name of Healey after 1911 and no death for Henry between his re-marriage and 1911

Perhaps he was working away from home - but he is not on the 1911 census

Thanks Carole

If he was working away, i presume he would have to had complete a census from where ever he was in the UK.

Could he have left the UK or joined the Army

How would I now check.

It is great that we have made so much progress since getting the birth information - now a new challenge

Thanks

Either or none of those.

There is nothing on www.ancestorsonboard.com re: leaving the country

He was a bit old to be joining the Army bearing in mind WW1 didn't start until 1914 - he was around 37/38 by 1911

If he had joined up - there would have been an entry for him either serving in the UK or shown under overseas military

If he by any chance had gone to Scotland - it will be 2011 before you can look for him

I have checked the 1911 index for Henry b Berkshire 1871-1875 but none of the entries look anything like Holmes

Hi Carole

Not sure as to whether i am looking in the correct place, but would these be possible entries for our man. I remember you referring to time they were married / and marriage record 1908.

Name                Birth            Departure Date Port etc
HOLMES Harry  Unknown M 1910 Liverpool Canada Montreal
HOLMES Harry  Unknown M 1909 Liverpool USA New York

This is bugging me now, but I suppose this is what makes it interesting.

Hi

I have my doubts but you would need to pay to view the passenger list to see if there is any more info.  If somebody has an FMP subscription, they may be able to look it up for you

It may be worth posting a new lookup request specific to those entries but make it clear that you don't want any census lookups etc or you will end up with all the same info

I have just been looking at the 1901 entry which shows his birthplace as Itchingwell Berks

Obviously all 1911 searches have been using Berkshire as his birthplace

Then I saw your lookup request re: passenger lists which gives his birthplace as Hampshire and alarm bells went off (hence my pm)

This is an interesting extract from the link below

http://berksfhs.org.uk/projects/Berkshire1871CensusProject.htm

Quote
Many migrated from the Hampshire village of Ecchinswell, a few miles south of Newbury, to Berkshire towns and villages.  Rare indeed is the enumerator who spells it correctly (Itchingwell is my favourite).
