Elizabeth Spurr
« on: Saturday 06 June 09 20:29 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to locate Elizabeth Spurr. I believe that her family may have moved from Nottinghamshire to Lincolnshire where Elizabeth married in 1806.

I have a theory that she could have been the daughter of  Thomas Spurr and Elizabeth Walker. They came from Whatton in Nottinghamshire, had two sons in Aslockton and then two more in Stow in Lindsey, Lincolnshire (according to second hand info passed to me by someone else). That is the same village where 'my' Elizabeth Spurr married William Bayes in 1806.

Elizabeth was my 4x great-grandmother and I would love to be able to get back further in locating her origins.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Alan,

I'm not sure what information you already have, i.e. do you know when Elizabeth was born?

An Elizabeth Spurr was christened at Whatton on 14 June 1788, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth. (England & Wales Christening Records)

Thomas Spurr (widower) married Elizabeth Walker on 1 December 1785 at Whatton in the Vale.  (Notts. Registers of Marriages)

IGI - (Hugh Wallis) - Baptisms at Stow in Lindsey, Lincs:
Parents of all are William & Elizabeth.

Jane Bayes - 26 November 1806.
John Bayes - 30 July 1809.  Death: 20 September 1809.
Elizabeth Bayes - 27 January 1811
Henry Bayes - 9 August 1812.
Sarah Bayes - 5 February 1815.
Mary Bayes - 23 November 1816

This seems to tie in with what you suspect.  Hope it helps.

Jill

Thanks very much, Jill.

I'd found the IGI record of Thomas and Elizabeth's marriage but did not know that he was a widower. The Mary Bayes, christened in Stow, was my 3x great grandmother.

Since posting the original message I have found burial records for Thomas and Elizabeth, also in Stow in Lincs, and the ages at the time of death link in with their christening records in Whatton - so it does look very likely that the theory holds up.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Mark,

Yes, its the same family. My direct ancestor (my 4x great-grandmother) is Elizabeth Spurr, whose father was the Thomas Spurr you mention (he, of course, is therefore my 5x great-grandfather). After Ann, Thomas's first wife's death in 1784, he married Elizabeth Walker in Whatton in 1785. Sometime in the mid 1790's I believe that the family moved across into Lincolnshire - to Stow in Lindsey.

I haven't had time to check all the details you've given, but an obvious discrepancy is the marriage of Thomas and Ann. The information I have is that Ann was born Ann Green in 1744 (in Car Colston, Notts).... she married John Bean in Car Colston in 1770, and then following John's death she married Thomas Spurr in Whatton, Notts in 1779. So at the time of her marriage to Thomas her surname WAS Bean, but her maiden surname was actually Green.

I'll have a better look at this tomorrow. Since putting this post on a few months back I have filled in quite a few details but I didn't have some of the info you've provided - so 'thank you'
