 Hi FamousWolf,
Glad you had trouble with the Sams as well

Two Sams I think in that time Simeon & Lydia's son b. 1782
and Elias & Elizabeth's son bap. Dec 1791 but b. 1789
The second one is my g.g.gf  His burial in 1855 gives age as 63 which as you say give
DOB 1791/92 but I think his age has been taken from his baptism date not birth date.
See freereg for confirmation.
He was living in Zoar street in 1851 and at his time of death.
He certainly married Matha Fair in 1814 and Charlotte Devonport in 1835
On St Peters PR Elias 1818 was born to Samuel and Mary but at that time he was married to Martha ?
This would be OK as there are two Sams but on 1841 census Elias appears along with
Martha's & Charlotte's children in Russel St. W-ton
This has puzzled me for some time and I have still not got an answer unless he took
in a relatives son.
Also prior to Elizabeth 1813 to Sam & Mary there is also Jane 1806 & Ann 1808 from
St Peters PR when my Sam would only have been 17

See what you make of it
Regards

Hi Robsdad

I am grateful for your discussion because it has filled in a gap in my own research which stalled a few years ago.  I'm sure my ancestor is Samuel lamsdale, son of Samuel and Martha and it sounds as if we share a common ancestor in Samuel senior.

I think that I have more questions in my mind that answers at the moment!

1 - Are there one or two Samuels here - the first who married Mary and the second who married Martha and then charlotte.  Like you, I'm  of the view that we have two because Samuel and Mary were having children from about 1813-1818 and the marriage of Samuel and Martha was in 1814.  So unless he was a bigamist, I think we have two Samuels.  But I think the key to the question is trying to find Mary's death certificate (or divorce certificate)

2 - The Elias question.  I've not seen the 1841 census.  Does it say what Elias's occupation is or relationship to the head of the household?  Is it possible that he was a relative and visiting on the day on day of the census or perhaps living as an apprentice?

3 - May I ask why you think that Samuel was the son of Elias and Elizabeth  - is it because the date of birth is close?  I was interested to read that Samuel was baptised about 3 years after birth.  I'm not sure if that is usual or not but i wondered if there could have been two Samuels here where the first died as an infant?   I found a reference to an Elias Lansdale who married Elizabeth Meek on 30/10 1789 and then as a widower married Nancy Whitworth on 10/2/1803.  Is this the same Elias do you think?

Hi
Yes I think two Sams (Say 1 ) b.1782 to Simeon & Lydia and one ( say 2 ) b.1789 bap 1791 to Elias & Elizabeth.  Look at Freereg under Langsdale ( you will find several spelligs of the name )  Another theory is that when Sam (2) regd. birth of Elias the name Martha was mis-heard and put down as Mary ( or am I clutching at straws )
It was usual to name the first son after yourself or your father - hence Elias.
1841 does not detail relationships or occupations. Elias and Elizabeth Meek were I'm almost certain parents of Sam (2 ) ie married 1789 Sam (2) b. 1789
As for Elias and Nancy I have no evidence that it is the same person ie Sam (2) father.
